Guys I am kicking around a half assed idea for my next project. God knows I need to finish the one in the works right now first. Any way I am kind of thinking of building a Ruger Number 1 chambered in 8x57 Mauser. You guys have any thoughts on the subject good bad or otherwise?

I'm not one to dissuade anybody from doing what they want, but honestly had not thought of doing a No.1 in 8mm Mauser.
The 8X57R makes some sense to me but either is a rebarrel or rebore job since Ruger didn't make any in an 8mm bore (unless they did some 8mm'06 but then you can't go backward to the X57 unless you set the barrel back)
The No.1 in 35Whelen from Lipseys looks to be an option but I know it is off the shelf and not the project you are looking for.

I'm with Huvius in that the 8 X 57R makes the most sense to me...but then I prefer rimmed cases in a single shot, falling block. Seems as good a fit for the #1 as anything else. I like the 8 X 57 in either guise but have never worked with one.....yet.

Be different! Look at the 8mm X 72mm cartridge.

Thank you all for the input. I did not see any reason that standard 8X57 would be a problem. I agree that 8X57R might be a better option but standard 8X57 ammo and components are easier and cheaper to come by. That is also the reason that I did not consider 8X68 or 8X72. Though I can see the attraction of a one off project. I am planning on having Gary Reeder out of Flagstaff do the work for me. I have been very happy with everything he has done for me up to this point. I was thinking case hardened frame and leaver with a 28 inch tube.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the 8x57.

It just seems sort-of mundane for a custom single-shot rifle.

I have always made it a point to acquire a minimum of 100 new cases or that amount of factory ammunition along with dies and a shell holder when beginning any new project.

It should be a great hunting rifle...
