Good day, folks

I am interested in recommendations for a 'smith to do rebarreling/rechambering, vintage sights, etc on a Ruger No. 1.

Between now and the day I find that "unbelievable deal" on a pristine 1885 Winchester, this Ruger will be the ticket for fun.

Any testimony on gunsmiths that specialize in single shot rifles are welcome.

Many thanks

DJ

dej470,

You might be interested in contacting Mark Penrod, Penrod Precision, 260-982-8385. I have seen some outstanding work he has done on Ruger #1's. If he can't find it, he will make it. Email me for more info.

You might check with Mark Stratton. He specializes in #1's. I have seen a number of them that he has built and they are very nice looking and very accurate. Here is a link

John Lewis, Carolina Precision Rifles. He does a bunch of work on #1's. He shoots a 30-378 #1 himself. He worked magic on my #1.

I sent my 45-70 back to Ruger for a new barrel because the original just wouldn't shoot straight no matter what. They installed a new one for $186 and it shoots much better.
They also replaced my Moyers trigger with a factory one, but they did such a nice job on it I'm not going to re-install the Moyers.

LeoCal,

I want to send my #1a in for a rebarrel. How was the service, what about turn around?

I sent a #1A into Ruger for a rebarrel. They did a very good job and the rifle shoots better than ever. The rifle still has all of the Ruger markings, sights etc on it and is worth way more than it would be with an aftermarket barrel.

It was done about five years ago, took a few weeks and cost about $135 at the time.

For some reason the reblued the action also for free.

Mine took about 3 months which included 2 weeks they took off for vacation shutdown. It probably depends on the time of year.
