New project: Buying and rechambering a Ruger #1 (either RSI or 1A) in 7X57 into a "faster" 7mm. The RSI has a 20" barrel and the 1A has a 22". Looking for 2900 with a 160gr bullet. Thinking about 7X57 Ackley Improved...any caliber suggestions? Any smithing problems with this idea?

I just looked real quick in my LOADBASE program and it looks like you'll have your work cut out for you to get 2900 with a 160. LOADBASE shows the .280 Rem topping out at 2900 or so from 24-26" barrels. The 7 Rem Mag might get there in the shorter barrel and definitely would in the 24" but I can't believe that a 7x57 imp would with appropriate loads. Sean

Get a Ruger #1 in 280 Remington, rechamber to 280 AI, and away you go. 2900 fps with 160's easy. - Dan

Dan, someone on the Gunsmithing forum suggested the 280 Imp in a 22" barrel too. Never thought of that caliber in the short barrel. Someone suggested thinking about 7 Rem too.....need to chew on those.
