Why 5 round groups are bull.

I have been experimenting with a TC contender barrel in 44 magnum for a while. I was trying for the longest time to get Lee 310 grain cast bullets to group well, but was running into leading and inaccuracy problems. I picked up some Sierra 250 grain FP jacketed bullets and loaded them with 9 grains of NM04 (like bullseye). This gave me 1075 fps average and a stdev of 17 fps.

The first five rounds hit the bullseye with a 1-3/4 inch group, the next five opened up the group to 4-1/4 inches. The cast bullets are grouping about 2 inches wide and 8 inches high. Both loads shot at 100 yards.

I thought that I was doomed when shooting subsonic with a 1-22 twist barrel, but this looks promising. I finally got my ATF form 1 back approved. I will make a silencer for it that covers most of the barrel and extends about ten inches past the muzzle.

I am going to get some 445 super magnum brass and see if I can seat the bullets out to the lands to improve accuracy.

No offense, but what does this have to do with group size?

5-shots has been the standard for the best part of the 20th century, and continues. Ask any benchrest organization.

PS: try changing your lube

None taken. Smiler The thread title is actually meant as a humorous jab at those who brag about their sub-moa accuracy based on a single three or five round group. Ten rounds is just a better example of how accurate a firearm is.

But I digress. I started with Lee alox, but am trying out a homemade lube made from paraffin wax and mineral oil. It appears to leave less lead in the bore and prevents the awful degradation in accuracy that results from the fouling.

I did learn the hard way that crimping and fast powders were also really bad for leading of the bore when using my cast bullets in this barrel.

A lot of guys in the CBA are using Johnson's Paste Wax and just tumbling their bullets. Tried that?

The furniture wax? http://doitbest.com/Main.aspx?...tm_campaign=DATAFEED

That is a new one for me. By tumbling you mean put some wax in a bowl, add bullets and mix them up? Interesting.

Hello ranb40,
Fooling around trying to make your own lube can be a joy unto itself..
But if you want to get to accuracy sooner you might try some of Lar45 (screen name for this forum)lube...
While I haven't used of his lube many others have and are pleased with it.. I would give him a call, explain what you are trying to do so he could recommend which of his lubes would best fill your needs..
Here is a link to his website:
