Have an inkling for a new single shot. I have a Ruger #1 in 45/70 SS that shoots lights out! BUT I hate the grey laminate stock and also hate that to get a nice piece of wood on it is over 1k.
I like the look of the B78, even with a round barrel, and it comes with pretty decent wood stock.
I've read a lot of problems with getting a sub-moa #1. I'm looking 30-06 or even 270 but would die if I spent nearly a grand and couldn't get handloads to MOA or better.
Have a old B 78 in a 22-250 (octagon barrel) that shoots great and from a visual, I like the exposed hammer. I have a #1 (243 win) that shoots great as well. I would select the one that looks the best to you and has the best trigger. I customized my #1 with some spectacular english walnut, 24 line checkering and case hardened the receiver and lever. It is a beauty!

Bisquit, I bought a new #1 B in 30-06 for a project that I now have abandoned. It shoots Federal 150g Fusion factory ammo very well. Only fired 12 rounds through it at sight in. If you are interested, let me know.
I was just having a hard time following the thread. The post said he had a No. 1 B for sale, and your next note said you had a new B78, which is apparently what you bought.

I own a 1A in 3006 and love it. I know it is broken because the warmer the barrel gets the tighter the groups get. I would not change it for any other rifle. Jim
I have two Ruger #1B's in 30-06 and one Browning B-78 in 30-06. The Rugers suck big time and that Browning shoots rings arounf the two Rugers. To be fair, both rugers have those Wilson barrels everyone complains about. I'd send them back but they fall within Ruger's accuracy standard of 2" at 50 yards. As much as those guns cost, you'd think they would make them shoot better that that. Paul B.
