I received my new Shiloh Sharps .45-90 today - ordered it in Jan. '06. MAN !!!, what a nice rifle. I can't wait to shoot it; I have brass & cast bullets, but I'm looking for a few loads - black powder &/or smokeless (AA5744). Any help would be appreciated.

500gr cast bullet, 28gr of AA5744...1300fps. Go from there slowly, like one grain increments. 78gr of Hodgdon's ffg 777 will do about the same thing.
Use standard LR primers, I have had too many pressure spikes from time to time with 215's.

Congrats on your shiloh!!! You will enjoy it. I've had one since '92 and it has given a good account for itself on many deer and a few pigs. and yes you can use gas checked bullets, plain based and jacketed. No filler is required or recomended for 5744. The only thing I dont like about 5744......or any of the AA powders I've tried is that they leave a good bit of unburned powder in the bore. This can cause the next cartridge not to fully chamber....I've had it happen and it is not a good thing when hunting.

what the man said RE GC or jacketed. Want some speed? Try the Laser-Cast 430gr GC sort-of SWC.

I think the flat shoulder helps scrape fouling from the shot before. I have shot them as fast as 2600fps from my 458 Lott, and as slow as 1300fps from my Trapdoor.

I own a lot of rifles, and somehow, my sharps are the rifles I end up sitting in front of the boob-tube just fondling of an evening. I have three, 45-70 and 40-65 in LRE, and a #1 Sporter in 38-90wcf.

Congratulation! One of my hunting buddies, of Gillette, WY, has a REAL nice one that he has been trying to take a deer with for the past few years. He only uses black powder (traditional cowboy stuff) rounds with it. I hope he bags one this year.

When I see him this year, I ask about the loads he uses. He doesn't have email unfortunately.

Good luck.

Accurate Arms lists 5744 data but I have found it leaves a lot of zombies (unburned kernels). SR 4759 is close to the same burning rate, has more bulk and burns cleaner. Also check out IMR 4227.
Hodgdon H4227 is a similar powder and you might find data for it, although H4227 was supposed to be discontinued.

I also recommend SR-4759. It burns pretty clean in my 458 WM reduced loads, all the way down to 350gr cast at 1000 fps muzzle velocity (that load threw alot of soot, though).

FYI - the Laser-Cast 430gr GC has been discontinued. Oregon Trail doesn't even list it on their site anymore. Confused
