hello all, I'm new to this forum and new to reloading... I'v got a Pedersoli Sharps 45-70 and I am working up some loads, both Black powder and smokeless. being an old muzzle loader guy, Im familiar with the BP and comfortable with what I'm doing. question is with the smokeless and bullet seating depth. the ramshot X terminator powder start load gives a 30.0 grains of powder behind a 500. gn bullet seated to an overall length of 2.550. I would like to seat the bullet a little tall in the case to a OAL of 2.875. this adds just over a 1/4 inch of more space in the case. how does this affect preasure? I'm using a slight taper crimp, just enough to hold the bullet from turning in the case. do you think I need some kind of filler? as 30.0 grns of powder is not much in a 45-70 case. thanks AL5

It will lower the pressure, giving more space in the cartridge. I have not worked with the powder you are using. If it is a faster burning power on the scale of IMR3031, or Re 7, you should be ok without filler. Others more knowledgable on this particular powder will hopefully comment on this.

What primer are you planning to use..???
In some cases, where ignition might be marginally reliable with a given powder/case choice...stepping up to a magnum primer will get you better ignition without resorting to using a filler. Hope this helps...
Cheers,
Don

thanks for the come back. I'm using the published data by the manufacturer. it calls for a large rifle primer CCI 200. I thought it may reduce the preasure, seating up, but was not sure. I'll check on the burn rate. thanks
