Ilve owned a lot of repro guns, but this is my first original. It has an octagon barrel with a nice bore. I haven't weighed or measured it yet, but I will do so and post photos. It has a rifle buttplate, Beech combination sight and the receiver is drilled and tapped for a tang sight. I think they all were. I'll guess that it weights about 9 pounds. I need brass and bullets and loading data. I can get data from ammoguide but I'd like to hear from anyone who rolls his own for a .32-40 Highwall.

Hello, I am not currently loading for the 32-40 but if you do not get any response here you should check out the ASSRA (American Single Shot Rifle Association) web site. Here is a link to the Forum section.

http://www.assra.com/cgi-bin/yabb/YaBB.pl

You can find a lot of info there.

Vol: Your High Wall sounds like a dandy. Look forward to seeing your photos.

I have not reloaded for a .32-40 HW, but routinely load for the caliber in a CPA and have done some for a '93 Marlin. (15" twsit)

In the CPA with a 200 gr. breech-seated bullet, 13.5-14.5 gr. of IMR 4227 with an LP primer. Groups are in the <1-2" range at 200 yd.

In the Marlin, which had a less-than-pristine barrel, a 170 gr. GC bullet from Montana Bullets and 15 gr. IMR 4759 got 2.5-3" groups at 100 yd. In another Marlin with pristine barrel, the groups were half that size.

The original Win. probably has a 16" twist, so keeping the bullet weight under 200 gr. is a good bet. Work with 4227, 4759, or 5744, starting at 13 gr. or so and working up to the 1400 fps range and see where the accuracy is best.

If I recall,

the 32-40 was found in several variations, both in single shot and lever guns, with different neck and throat configurations (such as breech seated bullets). Did you get any fired brass with it?

You may want to do a chamber cast, and catch the throat area as well.

No fired brass, but I'm going to produce some tomorrow. I just got a bag of Winchester empty brass, dies and bullets from Grafs yesterday.

I worked up a load using H335 of all things. That load was from the Lee die box insert. 170 grain bullets and it shot to the sights, but about 2 inches to the left. Took care of the zero and now I'm ready for deer season. I have a pair of engraved Highwalls in .30-40 Krag and 225 Win coming in from McGowen. I sort of hope they don't arrive before the season.
