Shot a few loads in it today.
400 grain sierra
38 grains h110 = 1779
39 grains h110 = 1860
40 grains h110 = 1896
34 grains lil-gun = 1752
35 grains lil-gun = 1829
36 grains lil-gun = 1898
37 grains lil-gun = 1926
------------------------------
hornady 500 grain XTP
28 grains lil-gun = 1510
29 grains lil-gun = 1545

33 grains H110 = 1548, 1577
---------------------------------
Also loaded some muzzle loader sabots.

nordrsetaSounds a lot like a 45/70, only with a bigger hole... The sabot'd 250 is kinda neat though. Thanks for the details.

RMillerI did get groups with all the loads but the sabots just spray all over. They do not tumble they just don't group at all.

BUCKMTInteresting, and informative. We're building a 500 SW on a Wickliffe action, Montana barrel blank (we're going full octagon), etc etc. Will be interested in seeing what it does.

BlammerWOW! them is some big boolits!
how much does Ranger Rick charge for the 700gr 500's? no price on his site.

wrongtargetEmail him, if he's not out hunting, he'll get right back to ya, I think it was about $23 shipped for 50, but I don't remember for sure.

RMilleralso loaded some barnes 375 grain xpb
35 h110=1757
36 h110=1838
37 h110=1859
38 h110=1878
looks to me like 36 grains is max with not much gain in velocity from more powder. There was no signs of high pressure with any of the loads.

500MagManRMiller the Sabots spray becose the powder is to hot and burning up the sabot, I have done the same stuff with mine and recoverd my sabots and found that they are just shards of chard plastic with 19grs of LILgun and swiched to Trail Boss 14.5grs using a standerd large rifel primer works better than a Magnum primer, and it is a very nice range load I even used round balls and get 3/4"-1" grups at 50 yards with open sights.
I want to know what brass is being used with the 700gr loads becose I am cracking brand new brass with the 535gr Keith bullets and that is a low powder charge that this is happing with...

Post me some more speeds I am trying to get a avg of what you are getting and me as well. I talked with Mike at Hogdgon and was recomended no to use H110 in the rifle and he recomened to sub it with LilGun, I am very happy with my results but if you are getting no sings of over preser than I might try it...
post any speeds you get with LilGun and have you done any testing with 275,325gr Barns X Bullets

500MagManThamks guys i have been figering % for incressed burn for FPS so I am guess in speeds of some of my loads in a rifle compared to pistol with max charges of Lil'Gun
275gr Barns X max powder charge 2380-2400 fps
325gr Barns X max powder charge 2240-2260 fps
375gr Barns X Max powder charge 1960-1990 fps
this is just a estamation by increses in speed from pistol to rifle and the a % of burn in cresse or decresse do to bullet wait...

RMillershot the lil gun rounds.
375 barnes XPB
31--1747
32--1799
33--1935
34--1901,1905
Think I'll try more at 33 grains to see if I can get a better idea of an average at that load.

ttDoes anyone know Handis chamber specs, because I'm ordering reamer for rifle project and I need to decide how much freebore I need and what kind of throat angle I should get. I read Daniel Liljas article about chamber design and I have reamers available from 2,5° to 5° angle. If you have accurate barrels with commercial bullets, so I would like to know some hints about proper chamber.

KDM CustomThe 500 S&W Magnum is incredible! You can take any animal on this Earth with it. I love a 700 grain WFNGC at 1250 fps. I've shot completely through a 700 lb Elk, a few large Razorbacks and a 300 lb black bear with it. I'm going to try a Bison in the near future.
