Ruger #1 rear sight replacement. Is there a good one?

I have Ruger #1s. I love them. I love the looks of them.

I HATE the rear sight that they put on them. Is there a good replacement rear sight (like the ones they put on their RSM rifles) that would be in a fix position? That is up, so that you can use them... Especially for the the Ruger #1 H Tropicals in the heavy calibers.

To my way of thinking, you have to be 3 cans short of a six-pack to put a scope on those rifles, and I can find no good reason why that rear sight should fold down.

It's just plain stupid.

How about a replacement. Any ideas?

Thanks for the website. I didn't see a replacement site, so I sent them an email to see if they had one.

NECG does make an adjustable peep sight which fits into the Ruger integral scope bases. I ordered mine through the Cabelas catalog, they are also listed in Midway if I remember correctly. It came with two interchangeable apertures.

I purchased this one for a Ruger 77 Mk II in 260 and like it a lot for this application. The position of the scope bases will place the sight a little further from your eye when mounted on a #1, but I would think it will still be far more desireable than most factory irons. I had a square topped post installed on the front, as I prefer to use a six o'clock hold instead of covering my target with a bead.

The only down side I can identify for my sight is that it is rather tall, which means that you need a rather tall front post to match it.

Since I use my 1H .375 H&H for elk, moose and caribou shooting, a scope is not so dumb! I use the same scope (Leup. 1.5X-5X) on it as I have on my other large-caliber rifles.

In addition, I find it a lot harder to use open sights nowadays, as you will too in a couple of years! I like the present sight setup on the 1H just fine. But if you contact Ruger, maybe they'll change the sights on the 1H.

I too recommend you contact NECG! They'll fix you up. NECG can put any kind of sight on that No.1 that you're willing to pay for!

The just plain stupid remark by me refers to the Ruger #1 Hs. Not so much with the .375 H&H as I have one and I have scoped it in the past.

Where I may not have made it clear, the Ruger #1 Hs in the .458, 416s, .458s Lott and any cartridge of their ilk, IMHO, the person must be a nut or very, very, very good not to 'creep' his stock under stressful/or/non-stressful shooting conditions.

If you can do it fine. Not me! I'll stand by that.

I'm in the same boat. My 458 has a Lupy 1.5-5 on it now but I want to use iron sights and the stock one sucks. How tall is the NEG? Do you have to drill the receiver to install a Williams FP?

Billhilly66,
Here is a link to the NECG website. I have one of their peep sights on my 77 mkII in 260. The peep sight is rather tall. My top of my front post is about 1.1 inches above bore centerline. On my rifle I used a square front post similar to the sighting system of a Garand.

I have not attempted to place this peep sight on my #1. It might set closer to bore line on a #1 than when mounted atop the action on a 77.

I had a new quarter rib and rear sights made for my #1 in 458 Lott. The rear blades are closer than the factory setup but I can't mount a scope anymore:

Thanks a heap invader66. I thought the sight itself looked like one of NECG's, but I didnt know they did the quarter ribs. I have one of thier peep sight and white bead combos on my #1 in .405. It works great but the peep is pretty bulky and in my opinion detracts from the lovely lines of the rifle. Anyway, I dont ever plan to scop my .458 so I will be having them install one of those ribs. Thanks again,

David

Stinky taters. I have xscopes on my .404 Jeffery and .416 Rigby #1H rifles and I'm damn well not tthree cans short of a six pack. When you get older, you won't be able to see those dinky-ass sights Ruger put on his guns and if you end up as near sighted as I am, it's either a scope or don't shoot the gun at all. I prefer to shoot the gun.

invader66,
I put one of those xs sights on my #1 and it works as advertised. they send you the replacement screws, the sights, a plastic punch and 2 plastic dummy sights to use for set up in case the real front sight they send is too high or low for your rifle. Mine worked fine. This combo looks much better on the rifle than the NEGC peep combo and i can see it better. I still think an xpress sight looks better though..........suits the rifle better IMHO. and by the way, does anybody know of some kind of jig for removing the #1 front sight w/o tearing it up? Man, that thing is a pain to remove.

Can the factory Ruger rib be 're-dovetailed' to allow a NECG rear sight insert to be fitted or is it not wide enough to look right with the NECG?

Does anyone make a fixed, express-style rear blade that would fit into the factory rear sight dovetail? --- or is it better to start from scratch?

Regards,

I tried to talk NECG into making one that would fit the Ruger dovetail last year, but so far no luck. That would be about perfect.
