I would like to know the quality of the H&R Buffalo Classic in 45/70 Gov't. Has anyone out there used or owned one? And what of the 45/70 for hunting deer sized game and larger? I like this gun, but I also want to be able to use it in the field. Any info would be greatly appreciated.

File this under the "any info."
My dad has the shikari, which as I understand is the old name for the same gun.
He runs some really hot loads and has for a while, checking for setback periodically, and he swears it can handle 500 (or 510, forget) at 1850 seated at about 2.7" COL IIRC. I've shot it, and it is right handy, heavy loads aside. Has a nice long barrel.
Quite a bargain for the money, though I'd still load it into the realms of sanity.

I have one. I am impressd with the fit and finish. Factory trigger isn't bad either. I ditched the factory rear sight for a Nikon 4x40 scope. The rear sight doesn't have enough elevation for long shots. There are other options for open sights such as the Smith Ladder sight. My setup is good enough to hit golf balls at 150 yards. Groups are about 1.5" @100 yards offhand. This is not the gun to shoot off the bench with.

The BC will handle low level Ruger #1 loads. But since Godzilla usually stays in Tokyo Bay most of the time I shoot lower level practice loads alot. My handloads use AA2015 and Remington's 405 JSP to get about 1800fps. Put a recoil pad on it. It can kick pretty hard with heavy loads.

You can also order other barrels through H&R1871's barrel accesory program.

I recently sold one to pay for another project. I had installed a Williams peep and globe front sight on mine. I also ditched the wood and fitted it with synthetic stock and forearm. That original metal buttplate was a cast iron bitch to handle!
I shot a 300 grain flatnose Remington over 50 grains of 3031. Accuracy was great, and I killed several deer with it.
Nice gun for the money.
Word of caution: watch that ejector when ejecting a live cartridge. It can chip a tooth if not careful.

I just ordered one will have it in 3 weeks when I get up in pa early m/l seaon.I handle the gun this past winter while down in myrtle beach, bass pro shop.I pass on it and bought the Handi in 06 I have to say for a $179.00 gun, this gun will print some excellent groups at the 100 yard target 3 shots just under 7/8 ".I found with the h@r you may run into some injection poblem when working with hanloads on the high side.I did have some stuck cases that was a problem when handloading near max:
I did reduce the charge by.5 grains and the problem was corrected.
I am interrested in shooting blackpowder out the 45-70 BC ,should be a lot of fun

You can go to http://www.marlinowners.com and enter "FORUMS". There is a forum for NEF rifles. The buffalo classic is well-liked and reportedly accurate by many posters.

I had one, in 45-70 and it was close to a moa shooter. The curved buttstock chewed me up, and a bought a replacement monte carlo laminate stock set for it. HUGE difference in recoil management, and got my eye up to the scope.

Sold the gun, kept the laminate stock-"just in case" I need it down the road.

I had one and found it less accurate than the shorter-barreled Handi flavor in .45-70, but better for shooting BP loads. It can kick, but bird shot in the butt through-bolt hole tames it considerably. I now have the version in .38-55. Very sweet shooter and much more comfortable.

I have the Target model which is basically the same thing but in 38-55 caliber. For the price they would be hard to beat.
