I shot the new loads 5/23/09 this barrel keyholed bullets at 50 yards hodgdon t7-3f 400 gr. wheelweights , I loaded 300 gr hornady jhp IMR 3031 64 gr it shot 2" group at 50 yards and no keyholing , any ideas what this barrel has that I can't really find why it acts the way it does ? I sluged it 3 times and did find a small torn area in barrel about 3" long , I am considering getting it bored out to 50/110 cal .

What is the diameter of you cast bullet?

Are you using anything between the powder and cast bullet (fiber wad, grease cookie, etc.)

What is the barrel's rate of twist?

Concho, its probably the wheel weights. That triple 7 crap is not helping. If you are interested in a black powder load, use black powder. Change your bullet alloy to pure 30-1 lead/tin and lube the bullets with Black Magic lube. SPG/White Ligtning lubes work fine, too.

You will find almost no one that has found a tolerable way to shoot the black powder subs in a cartridge rifle.

5744 on the other hand is an excellent way to go.
