I'm looking for a winter project and would like to stock a single shot. How hard is it to get a Ruger No.1 or a modern Browning highwall action? I won't need a barrel because I'm thinking of a 17 Hornet and I doubt if there were any made in this caliber. Dick Wright

finding just the action of a commercial gun may be a little tough. I will send you a pm on a lead to a #1.

Ruger used to sell barreled actions many years ago; not bare actions. Now, no. Find a rifle you like and throw the barrel away; only way to get an action. Same for a Browning.

Max, Please check your PM's. I really appreciate the tip. I want to do the same thing as chronicled in "My new Project" in the custom rifle forum. Thanks again, Dick Wright

You may want to call John Schafstahl (spelling??) at C. Sharps in Big Timber, Montana. He sells machined AISI 8620 Sharps 1874 actions and locks and barrels. He may also sell Winchester High Wall actions and barrels and Remington-Hepburn actions and barrels. You want a project, these are PROJECTS. It's so simple to be wise. Just think of something stupid to say and then don't say it. Sam Levinson

This is what I have in mind for the No. 1 action which Max told me about and which I bought. This is my deer rifle, a No. 1 .243 made years ago by Jack Haugh, the Indiana artist. From the ridiculous to the sublime... The No 1 action started life as a .458. I'm going to get a light barrel and have it chambered in a .17 Hornet. It will eventually become a light carrying rifle. I will do the stock work. Jack had two strokes recently and is no longer available. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the help of those who responded to my request, especially Max, without whom I wouldn't own the action. Bless you... Dick Wright
