I have a TC Encore Katahdin muzzleloader. I love the gun. I want to get a 24' 30-06 stainless barell for it. I want to put a Leupold 1.75*6 VXIII in Leupold QD or QRS mounts so I can still use the iron sights. Also I plan on putting on a williams peep sight on it like the Katahdin muzzleloader barell came with.

I plan on using the rifle primarly as a deer rifle up here in Maine. Does anyone have any experience with a set up like this????

Thanks

I have a Encore 30/06 barrel with iron sites and a scope. I also wanted to be able to use the iron sites so I used see through mounts called Kwik Sites. The scope is not quickly detachable and sits higher off the gun than many would like but it works well for me.

I have used a Weaver base and Leupold QRW rings on an Encore 405 Win with a Leupold 2.5-8 x 36 with great success. Repeatability is good and use of open sights without the scope is great. You need a low profile weaver base like the Maxima. You can do exactly what you want with that set up, although in my case I needed a taller front sight from NECG, which turned out perfect.

I forgot to mention, that when I take off the scope, I mount a NECG adjustable peep in the rear base. This setup allows me to switch back and forth between scope and peep with excellent repeatability and accuracy. I believe the longer sight radius with the base mounted peep is much more accurate than the factory rear sight.
