I know this has been probably hashed before. I just returned from a hunting trip with my No1. The rifle did well getting my deer, but man the trigger is really rough. I'm used to about three pounds on my bolt rifles and was wondering if a good gunsmith could rework this one?

cessna.

Repacement triggers are available from several sources. On a couple of my #1's I have had a good gunsmith polish the sears and mating surfaces. Makes a huge difference.

I also live in NW New Mexico. I'd be interested in your gunsmith maybe working on mine. I'd send you a PM, but I'm not sure how to. PM me some info if you'd be so kind.

cessna,

The gunsmith I used now works for Beretta, so is no longer in the area. There are some good smiths in Albuquerque I have been told, but do not know any names. Maybe some of our AR friends can help out.

I think it's just better to replace the triggers on the newer No. 1s. A good smith can rework the current triggers to work OK but a copy of the old 3 screw Ruger trigger is adjustable.

Is anyone making a 3 screw replacement trigger?

I've used the Moyer in the past but understood it is no longer available.

You maybe right GunCAT but it looks like you can still get them from E. Arthur Brown Company.

I have purchased 4 of them in the past from these guys, seem to be a good company to do business with.

Interesting. Sorry to see them go. They were not the best casting I ever saw, they needed a lot of work but they were sure better then the 2 screw triggers of today.

Jard had one on their website. I have no idea of it's quality/reputation.

The Jard is not a “drop-in” trigger, that’s for sure.

My deer rifle is a complete custom Ruger No. 1 by Jack Haugh. I fought with the factory trigger for years and, finally, had Rob Osborne of White Cloud, MI put in a Kepplinger set trigger.

The new trigger, un-set, is a nice crisp 4 lbs. It's so good it feels lighter. Set, the trigger pulls a few ounces.

I've shot competition benchrest for years and we use 1-1/2 or 2 oz. triggers. When fall came I used to have one hellava time just getting the durn thing to go "BANG".

When I got it the trigger was $280.00 from Brownell's amd Rob charged me $150.00 for the installation. Since Jack Haugh's rifles go for a lot of money, this cost wasn't real significant.

I would recommend Rob Osborne for any work of this sort. He is a benchrest competitor and makes his own guns. I've had good luck with his work, he keeps his promises and he's a good guy to work with.

Older Moyers were nice, new ones are very rough castings, but still a good trigger. I filed and polished the area that extends into the trigger guard, so the grooves are gone and rounded the face so it gives a feel more like the trigger on a nice old double barrel shotgun. In my opinion as they come they look out of place on a good gun like a #1 and do not feel very good, but a few hours fixes the problem.

If you look close at the picture posted by ggreen you can notice some of the roughness and that does not appear all that bad.

I put a set trigger on my .375 #1 years ago for a short time. The set worked very well, giving a very light and crisp trigger pull. However, when the set trigger clicked, the brain knew the rifle would soon fire at the end of the amazing long #1 locktime and recoil like a 375 should. A true flinch inducer! I gave the trigger away. I suppose it would have worked well on a low recoil rifle on the bags.
