Guys,

What was the model of the older single shot rifle that Savage offered?

219. Available in 30/30 and 22 Hornet, at least.

vangulik,

Thanks! I wonder if anyone knows if there is a way to attach a scope to a 219.

Weaver used to, and may still, make a side mount bracket to fit the 219, but since holes must be drilled and tapped for it I see no reason to use a side mount when you could just as easily drill and tap the top of the barrel for the bases of your choice.

Savage 219 receivers, at least those made in 1960, were grooved for typical 22 rimfire type scope mounts.

You must be thinking of some thing different then the 219 single shot.

As with most single shots the receiver is far to short/small to have any type of meaningful scope mounting grooves put on it.

You are correct. 1960 was a long time ago. The 219 that I had then must have had a 22 scope mounted using grooves in the barrel, not the receiver.

I think the early 219's were available in 32-20 and maybe 25-20 (?) as well.
Neat little rifles. Most I've seen have been aftermarket D&T'd for a Weaver side mt. including my 219 in 22H.

They made quite few versions and switched to a sidelever opening. I wouldn't be surprised if later they included scope mt grooves in the bbl.
Every rifle needs a 'scope after all.

YEs they were produced in 25-20, 22 HOrnet, Not sure they came in the 32-20 as I have heard that but never seen one..I have owned more than a few of those 219, Weaver makes a base but you will have to drill and tap it.. used Talley custom bases that had to be fitted, and old redfild one piece bases that were hand fitted back in the day..The ones I owned shot well indeed, but I have heard of some not being able to make them shoot. most need a shim under the forend up front..I custom stocked one in a Hornet IMP. and had it rust blued and a set of stith 7/8s mounts added for a 2.5X Lyman Alaskan, mounted to center the focal plane..It was plumb cute but I later sold it of course..It seems they all had a very light clean breaking trigger..Only game I shot was a couple of coues deer on my dads ranch and it did the job just fine..

I would not use a side mount, they do quite well with a top mount of any kind custom fitted or get a set of weavers..I have set of weaver bases for my next one..I want a 25-20 to rechamber to a 25-35 one of these days..but may go the liner route with a hornet, not sure..

The first model 219 used an inline striker system which was of interest to me. I have a couple of those.
