Picked up another Ruger no 1 that I had been on the search for. Ruger #01327 blued / walnut 22" barrel in .45-70.

The neat thing about this rifle is it is brand new in the box (2013 manufacture). Has been on a gun stores rack for sale for almost 10 years. The things you find in small towns Big Grin

I'm considering putting a Leupold 2.5x ultralight or Leupold 4x fixed power on the rifle.

I believe the model is 1_A? 1-S is a 24 or 26 inch barrel, iron sights, Alex Hendry forend. at least the ones Ive had. I have had two 1-S rifles in 30-06, and a 338 Win..My 45-70 was 22" std wt barrl at 22 inches and stamped 1-A??

They're not called a 1A. That refers more to barrel weight than to barrel length. For example, Linsey's has offered a number of special runs that had 1A barrels of 24" length (eg, a 25-06). The 1B and 1S have the same weight barrel (medium contour, essentially), but of course the S has sights. The 45-70s are S weight barrels and 22" long. Lipsey's also offered a run of 6.5 Creedmoor 1B rifles with 28" barrels (I have one). The so-called tropical or African models come with two different barrel weights, although they are almost always 24" long. The 450-400 rifles are (mostly "C" weight barrels. The 416 Rigby and 458 Win are "D" weight. They made a few of the 450-400 guns with the heavier "D" weight barrels. The difference between the Rigby and 458 barrels and the "C" weight 450-400 guns is very noticeable when you handle them. I always wished they had made the 45-70 in 24" length, not 22", as well as the rifles they offered in 9.3x62 and 9.3x74. I haven't owned those for that reason.

Be aware that the recoil is severe when approaching 2000 fps with 400 gr bullets. I think the one I had produced more felt recoil than from my full power 458 500 gr loads.

The 400 gr. load of a 450/400 at about 2050 fps in a No. 1 isn't too bad. Maybe no worse than a hot 375 load. But those have heavier 24" barrels, not the light 22" of the 45-70. Must say, I don't quite get the 45-70 craze, as it seems it's more punishment than it's worth. I'd rather play with a 458 or 450/400. But to each his own.

I have owned and played with all three you mention above. In some cases, multiples.

The great thing about the 45-70 1S is the portability and light weight. I sure loved packing it up and down mountains, vs the heavier rifles.

But yeah....the 405gr Woodleigh at 2,050 and just wearing a peep sight...came back pretty hard.

I would like another 338 win like the one I bought many years ago..A Ruger 1-S with a 26" barrel, and of course iron sights and Alex Hendry fore end. It balanced so well and was accurate at one inch most every time for 3 shot groups. I believe I bought it new in first year of production???

Ray, I don’t think you’ll ever own a really nice rifle….or should I say ‘keep’ a really nice rifle.

My 1H was not really pleasant to shoot with the Ruger pad and the Hornady loads, Limbsaver pad was a colossal improvement. I ran some cast 400 gr to 2100 for fun, wasn't all that much fun past 1800, which was actually reasonably comfortable at 1800, 320's at 2050 were even better. Nice part of the #1 in 450-400 is it is really versatile bulletwise.
