Gentlemen: Would any of you know where I could get a 40-65 Trim die and a taper crimp die? Also, do any of you guys have some good smokeless powder loads for a 400 grain cast bullet. My father bought one recently and shooting it is a helleva lot of fun. Went out today for the first time and shot it ten times with Accurate 8700. A load that my father got from some article in a magazine. We loaded 45 grains and it filled the case pretty good. However, the powder is too slow as there is a lot of un burned powder left in the barrel after the shot. The rifle had a sort of "pop gun" report upon firing it. I do not know what the velocity was, but I think that it was real slow.

Midway (www.midwayusa.com) has Lyman taper crimp dies and Redding trim dies in stock.

I have a complete set for making from 45/70 brass to 40/65 got it from RCBS Blount in California also RCBS reloading dies for same caliber .

Lyman has good data in their manual but you have to buy it. They also have data that they send with the cast bullets they sell in 40 caliber.
Accurate Arms also has data and it is on the internet. My best results come from SR 4759 which is an IMR poowder.

Lyman lists AA5744, IMR 4895, SR4759, IMR 3031,
IMR 4198, Varget, and Reloader 7.

I do not like to list powder charges because trypros arr so easy. It is also not a good practice to list them for a caliber like this in which a beginner may find later and try in his old original BP rifle.
You do not really need a trim die or a taper crimp for this round in the Browning.
It is a blast to shoot though.

I purchased a box of 40 cal Lyman bullets for my 40-65 and inside was load data for smokless powder.

I would appreciate your e-mailing me the loading data for the 40-65 using smokeless powder. Went shooting with my father. We shot a load of 35 grains of Pyrodex and a 400 grain bullet this last weekend. The load was a real powder puff. It sounded like a popgun when fired. We checked the zero at 200 yards and then proceeded to shoot at a steel buffalo at the range here in La Luz. The distance to the buffalo is 360 yards. It seemed that we had to raise the real aperture sight up two inches to get the bullet on the buffalo. Was not that bad, but it sure seemed so. My dad is sure is getting into this single shot shooting. Haven't seen him this committed in anything as of late. He is 86 years old.
