Won't argue with you Andrew. It was just a nice fit to go with my 450/400, but that said I wouldn't pass on a good buy for a 416. Last year I met Frank Beller and I think something happened, I have bought more rifles since then than I had in the prior dozen or so years.

I thought of adding teh 450/400 to my collection, but with kids in college etc, I decided to upgrade my 416 with a custom rib, integral QD mounts and an express sight-may case color the receiver/guard/lever as well-will show pictures once I figure it all out. Still looking for advice on how to go about this project

A local shotgun stocking expert adjusted my factory stock to fit better (lefty)-made a little improvement on recoil, but that straight stock still delivers!

I have always wanted one, but never bought one until yesterday...when I bought two.

450/400

I just added a Ruger#1 to my collection also, it is a 9.3X74R. Do you guys know if it is true that they may stop making this cailber available in this gun?

We waited soo long for the gun to come out and I here that it maybe taken out of production!

I love the #1s, and own a few... mostly two of each caliber. The 45-70 and the 7MM STW are my favorites.

my latest #1s is also a 9.3x74r. a really nice #1, fast becomming my favorite rifle. shoots under 1 inch with just about anything i load for it. 2700fps with re15 and 250 accubonds. light recoil too. sort of. but really pleasing to look at also.

I'm glad to hear that your gun shoots well. I have owned a Valmet double rifle in 9.3X74R for years, and I have been waiting for this Ruger for years. My gunsmith is in the process of installing a recoil 1" pad with a 1/2" spacer. I have a 15 1/4 " pull, so I have opted for the less expensive method rather than a custom stock. The No 1's are great just a bit short for my lenght of pull.

The factory trigger pull came in at 3 1/2 lbs., so I will try it out first.

My new gun is topped with a Leupold 1.5-5 VX-III, and it does look sweet. It should be at the range soon.

I own two No 1's. The first one is a 300 Win Mag 1B, the second a 416 Rem Mag Tropical. The only compliant is the fragile folding rear sight and the small front sight on the 416. I called Ruger and tried to buy an express rear sight for a Hawkeye and attempt to fit it to the No. 1. Ruger would not sell the sight. I am having a NECG rear sight installed now along with a thicker recoil pad for my 6'-3" frame. I will bring the rifle on a Cape buffalo hunt in September. The next No 1 will be a 7 by 57 for my wife.

I'm 6'3" myself, but that didn't stop me from purchashing a brand new "limited edition" Ruger No.1 in 35 Whelen K1A today. The No.1 is stainless steel with nice walnut stocks. Check out: www.gunblast.com "Limited 35Whelen Ruger No.1 Single" October3, 2006, for specifics.

My gunsmith called and suggested that I try a 1" pad with a 1/2" spacer. We will try this pad and spacer combo on the 9.3X74R No.1, if I like it, I will do the same addition to the 35 Whelen, and the 7MM STW No.1 with laminated stocks.

I have gone the route with custom stocks before, they are nice but costly and U.P.S. usually damages them after you waited 6 months, that is not fun. If you have the good fortune of going on a hard hunt you will not be happy with the "rash" you get on your nice piece as you drag up and down the mountains.

If you buy the 7X57 No.1 for your wife, she is going to out shoot you! I own one that is circa 1974 that I picked up used and it is "mint". The gun shoot needles! If you take the 7X57 to the range first, she will never get that gun
