Have a 1885 highwall in 300wsm made by winchester. My guestion is, what would be one of the first things you would do to make it more
accurate.Other than buying a better rifle. Just
started shooting single shots. Sure would like some help. Thanks

shoot it with some different ammo. Maybe it does not need anything done to it.

Some of these high stepping magnums need to be broke in. They shed copper along the barrel when new. Frequent cleaning with J-B paste is needed to remove the fouling. For the first while you should clean every 10 shots.

A consistent repeatable hold on the rifle is very important for good groups. Don't fire more than 3 rounds for a group. Keep the barrel cool.

Mine is a Browning 1885 hi-wall in 22-250. First, and only thing I did was send it off to the repair facility in Arnold, MO. No one around these parts would attemp to adjust the factory trigger. And the little screw at the trigger base didn't do squat. I wrote an impassioned letter stating that the trigger was not up to the task of what a varmint rifle was meant to do.

I got it back in less than 2 weeks and couldn't be happier. It's light and crisp and as good as an external hammer hooked to the underlever is gonna get. It's never going to be like a bolt action trigger.

It's now an honest to goodness 1\2" group at 100 yards rifle. All my own handloads...never fired a factory round. All at no charge to me except the initial UPS shipping.

I believe Winchesters would go to the same facility.

I used to have an 1885 in 45-70, and it shot .75" groups at 100 yards with handloads.

Handload for it and it will make you smile.

Have you tried working up an accurate handload for it? Before I do anything to a rifle, be it a bolt-action or a single-shot, is to try to find a load or loads it likes.
