Picked up a little used #3 in real good shape.
This should make a good tree stand rifle in the woods. The cartridge is an old timer with moderate power. Anyone using one of those?

A two or three power scope with a big dot should work well enough in the woods?

Kewl! That rifle/cartridge combo always seemed (at least to me) to be a match made in Heaven (or was it New England?).

Wish I'd bought one when they were available.

Rick -

In the game of "kick Myself", the first guy never has a chance...

In the mid '80's, at the Mesa (AZ) Gun Show, I bought a one-of-a-kind .375 Win/Ruger #3. It had been beautifully re-stocked with fantastic wood and full wrap-around checkering on both pistol grip and forearm by the head stockmaker at Weatherby's early on when they were considering marketing specially dolled-up No. 3's.

That marketing endeavor apparently never came to fruition, so he still had the rifle when he passed on to the Happy Hunting Grounds. I bought it from his widow for $265 (her price, which I paid gladly). It appeared 100% New and unfired.

I kept it for about 10-12 years and never got around to fring it. Then I traded it to a local gun shop here for a pre-war Model 70 in 7x57 (in about NRA "Good" condition, no jewel). From what I understand it then went to the Reno Gun show where it sold instantly. Of course I've never seen it since.

Damn!! Why don't YOU kick me? I can't do it hard enough....

My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.

Canuck,

Not "one of a kind" story but I used to work in the warehouse of a large distributer and could have bought anything from Ruger, Winchester, Colt, Savage, Marlin, S&W and several other brands at "wholesale". We had a stack of #3 and #1's from time to time. I always lusted but never had the $ working at a bit over minimum wage.

But I still have the Winchester SuperX Model 1 I paid $275.00 for. Smiler

actually, the cartridge is an update of an "old" cartridge. The 375 is a modern version of the 38-55, and is loaded to considerably higher pressures.
I imagine in a #3, you shouldn't have any problems with any good strong load.
I have a big bore winchester in that caliber, and it is a really nice shooter. It ought to work on the biggest and baddest Texas hog there is.

I have a 375 winchester t/c contender & really like it. It shoots in the 1.25" range & has very little recoil. I shoot the Hornady bullets with rl 7.

Actually my Ruger #3 has a #1 stock and a sporter Alexander type schnabel forearm.

That #3 under leaver is a knuckle buster on that stock. It really hurt my fingers, and of course when put your hand on top of the leaver you can't get a grip on the pistol grip.

My solution was to cut the #3 leaver at the bottom of the first bend and reshape it and weld the cutoff piece on the upper part ala #1.

This of course requires to take the action apart to remove the leaver. It is a lot of work and that steel is hard as rock, it works realy well and looks not too bad

A #1 leaver does not fit the #3 without some serious fitting and a #1 trigger guard. It
can be done but I don't think it is worth the trouble.

Don't like big bore in number 3.........that straight stock is a killer with recoil...ok with 223 or 357 mag but a bear with 375 or 45/70.

It sure will. I use Leupold 2.5X, 3X, and 1.5X-5X scopes on woods/dangerous game rifles. A big dot is fine, as are the post & crosshair or the GERMAN "converging telephone-pole" type reticles like they use for shooting wild boar at night!

El Deguello.
One can always depend on you to come up with good advise. I decided on the Leupold 1.5-5
with the heavy duplex.

If I don't like that, I have the Leupold service depot almost next door and can have the reticle changed to a big 2 MOA dot.

Here is the scope base set up on my 25-06. The 375 Win will be the same. I don't have the scope yet but the bases are nearly finished.
