Recently got a Ruger No. 1 in 45/70 and I would like to mount a scope on it. It has the factory quarter rib. I have read that due to the mounting location on the Ruger the eye relief is a problem.
Can anyone give me a recommendation on a good mid-quality scope for 100 yd target with the proper eye relief?
What kind of mounting rings fit the Ruger quarter rib. It has the half moon grooves in the quarter rib which are unlike what I have seen before.
I put a Leupold, VXII, 1-4x20 with a Duplex cross hair on my .375H&H using the Ruger rings that came with the rifle. Looks "right" on the rifle, in other words not a large scope, with plenty of eye relief. --- John303.
First, it uses Ruger rings (that it came with), if none are present, they can be ordered from Ruger or purchased at many larger gun shops. Leupold, warne and many others also make aftermarket rings.
I have several number 1's and they will handle most medium eye relief scopes. You will probably need to stay away from " long" scopes.

I have three #1's, 220 Swift, 338 Win Mag, and a 375 H&H. I have had at one time or another, a Weaver K 10, a Leupold 4X, 6X, and a 2X to 7X on them.
I have had no problems with any using the Ruger or Warne rings. Eye relief has not been a problem except the old K 10, which is a little more critical.

I stick to leupolds on my #1s because they do have excellent eye relief. My 4570 wears a varix III 1.5x5 but for a bit less money a vx2 1x4 would work just as well

I have two Ruger#1 tropicals a 375 H&H and 458 Win. and have Leupold 2.5x scout scopes in Leupold qd rings mounted. Plenty of eye relief. I initially had a 1x4 Leupold mounted and did not have enough relief, the ocular bell was too close to my eye for comfort.

Scuba, It may depend on your shooting style but the #1 is not scope friendly for me. I prefer a scope with long eye relief and a long tube from the turret back. I don't like to crowd a scope and I like to shoot with my head up somewhat. Some of the Bushnell Elites and Burris scopes have a long tube behind the turret. However most of them are also large high mag scopes which I don't care for on the number 1. I like scopes with a small or no front bell on a hunting rifle. I have an old Burris 2X7 Widefield on a 7mm Rem Mag #1S and a K2.5 Weaver Micro Trac on a 45-70.

I have a tropical in .375 H&H with a Leaupold 2-7x that looks much like Cessna's. Eye relief has not been a problem. The fella i bought the gun from had a 2x Redfield on it, but that's just not enough scope for me!

Got a Redfield 4-12x, the new ones made by Leupold, for Xmas and put it on my #! SS 30/06 and it gives me plenty of eye relief using the rings it came with. I'm happy!

I would lookat the nikon monarch african in 1x4, it has a 4.0 to 4.1 eye relief and if you wanted more power then I would go with the zeiss 3x9x40, it has a 4" eye relief with the optics far better than 99% of leupolds at 399.00 or less on e-bay and demos at cameraland for even less. I have the #1 i 416 rigby and those are the scopes I'm looking at just haven't made up my mind yet. All of my scopes are zeiss but might try the nikon african 1x4 this time because of the field of veiw and constant eye relief and I just like how it looks on the #1.
Had a problem getting a scope close enough to my wife's custom stock #1. Put on an old 2x7 Redfield Widefield. This scope allows you to move the scope very far to the rear. It works but does not look right. Currently, Nikon has some scopes advertised with 5 inches of eye relief, which should work great. Cabelas has a 3x9 scope advertised with 4.5 to 5.2 inches of eye relief. Bushnell has a 6500 model with 5 inches of advertised eye relief. Several choices of hunting size scopes with plenty of eye relief from about $100 to $600. Lots of choices.

I've got a Zeiss Conquest 4x on my 7x57 but sadly it's been discontinued. I've also have a Minox ZA3 and it's got a steady 4in of eye relief and enough tube length so there's another option.

Here's a suggestion that I have used successfully: Use Leupold or Burris Intermediate Eye Relief scopes on No 1s. Push them as far forward in the rings as possible and they work like a charm! The only drawback is the greatest magnification is 2.75 power.

I was looking for one of those to put on my #1 45/70. I also was when I realized they are not making the available 2010 and 2011.
