I just got my second hand Nef all ready to go installed sling swivels and leupold ringsa with an older weaver v9 scope. I was all stokked to go do some plinking at the range, but I would be in for a dissapointment. I thought all along that the scope base didn't look right, but I got a good deal on the gun and decided I had nothing to loose, I am starting to regret that now. I couln't get the gun on paper at all, I was like WTF. Then I noticed the scope mount was not only loose but wobbley, So I took off the scope, and decided to remove the scope mount to see what was going on. Well here is where bubba comes along, there are 2 screws that hold the weaver #62 base to the barrel, There are 2 other misdrilled and tapped holes that don't line up with any on the bases, so I thought ok I put the base back on tightned the 2 screws as much as possible then fired 2 rounds the scope was wobbley agian so I decided I was done at the range. So my question is what should I do?? also some additional info, the barrel is a 30-30 stainless or nickel finish says SB2 and the 2#'s on the barrel hinge match the last 2 on my reciver, but my reciever is blued, also there is one hole drilled into the barrel about midway down I would guess for iron sights however there is no evidence of a front sight whatsoever. the next question I have is did these barrels come predrilled and tapped for a scope mount what is the deal??

well this is easy, what does the barrel look like inside is the first question, if it is real good then get some long screws that fit the holes tighten and lightly peen file smooth and the bad holes are gone, now you could have a smith install a new ultra mount or a side mount peep sight but just remember for 86.00 you could replace the whole barrel in the caliber of your choice , these guns are so cheap it's hard to do anything with them.

I know If i where to do anything else with the barrel I would have a smith do it. I guess what I am wondering is, If I had the correct handi scope base installed I am sure there would need to prolly be at least 2 additional if not 4 new holes drilled and tapped, a guy at the range said there should be 4 screws that hold the base in place, and I am inclined to agree. I am starting to wonder if this is compromising the saftey of the barrel. otherwise the barrel looks great inside. the only 30-30 barrels available through the accessory program come with iron sights, do they also come drilled and tapped??

CC, The proper base is a Weaver #82. I just put one on my .357 Mag barrel that came drilled and tapped from the factory, even though it comes with open sights. If you put a little clear fingernail polish on the threads before tightening the screws it will act sort of like Loctite. That should keep the screws from getting loose, but they will still come out if you need to remove the base for any reason.

My quess without seeing anything is that you have the right holes and the wrong base. Time enough to worry after you try a base you know is right. The other route would be to have the base drilled to fit the holes on the barrel. Never mess with a gun when you can mess with something cheap like a base.
