I have a few questions about mounting a scope on the Ruger No. 1: 1) What is the spacing between the rings? 2) How wide are the actual rings themselves? 3) Has anyone used a scout style scope on a Ruger No. 1? 4) What would you guess the to be the maximum distance the scope could be mounted from your eye? The reason I ask is that I am contemplating purchasing a Ruger No. 1 in .405 Winchester, and I don't really like that a scope with standard eye relief covers so much of the breech of the Ruger No. 1. I was thinking of using a 1x or 2.75x Burris scout scope alleviate the problem. The only catch is that for the 2.75x to work I need 8.5" of eye relief and I don't think that will be possible. I guess a possibility would be to mill the integral recoil lug off of a couple of extension rings and mount them backward, but I am open to suggestions. I have also considered using a peep sight, but with my eyesight I do much better with a scope, even if it is low power. Thanks, Jesse

Ring spaceing on the Ruger #1 I have is 3", and the ring width is .6". I had a problem with too great an eye relief with the standard rings and purchased the offset rings from Ruger to move my scope closer to my eye. I would imagine if you needed to achieve even greater eye relief for your particular scope you could install the offset rings to move the scope even further forward. I've never used a scout style scope, but this has been my experience. Is there a way to easily reverse the extension rings without having to mill off the integral recoil lug and have a new one made for the opposite side?

I don't think a standard scope set up on a Ruger #1 would be much of a problem with the .405. I certain;y is not a problem with my #1S in .45-70 or my #1H in .375 H&H. I have 21 Ruger #1 rifles and only the .404 Jeffery and .416 Rigby are sans scopes. In fact, the only two rifles where the scope kind of gets in the way are the #1V in .223 and the #1B in .22 Hornet, and that's because the ammo is so small. If you are concerned about a rapid reload, just make sure your ammo drops right in without you having to push it in on the last few fractions of an inch with your thumb. I also have another rifle based on the #1 action in .223 that has a Remington M7 barrel and the mount used is for a scout scope, but is used in the normal position for regular scopes. I'm not sure, but I think Burris made it. I don't have the rifle at hand right now as it is on loan to a friend's son for a Javalina hunt he drew for. Paul B.

on my new #1s i put a leupold 1.5x5vx111. i just couldn't get a comfortable sight pic, so i put a 2.5-8vx111 on it and when it is set on 4to 5 power the eye relief is just right. i also wear tri-focols and am old and can't see anything, but this works really good for me.of course the scope is set back as far as it can go in the mounts. and i am using high mounts but i think medium mounts might work better, just don't have any.it seems for me, that all of those leupold scopes have the best view when the power selector ring lump is standing straight up. might be just me? the leup 2.5 -8vx111 definately is a superior scope for the #1 for me. just my 2 cents
