I just purchased one of the Winchester Limited 1885 in the .405 WIN. mostly for long range CAS, but not the real caliber I was looking for CAS, however the dealer made me a offer I couldn't refuse so I bought it. Here's the big question; Anybody out there load cast bullets in the .405 Win? I've got to reload some cast lead bullets to below 1400 FPS to be legal in long range CAS. I've been using Leadhead .411 270 grain gas checked in my Encore. There are others with the traditional 300 grain. I've heard good things about Mt. Baldy bullets but I have not tried them. You can go heavier especially with the lower velocity and san gas checks but for that you will have to cast your own. Mountain Moulds and NEI can help out there. NEI will cut GC moulds without the GC and Mountain Moulds has an online design program to make just about anything you want. The beauty of the second amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it. -- Thomas Jefferson http://tcbunch.com

Ck Is this one of the new ones Winester came out with this year. I saw one at the Shot Show this Jan. But have not seen any in stores. Does your rifle have a tang sight? Fred M. zermel@shaw.ca

ZERMEL, Correct, it does have a tang sight. "Concerning the difference between man and the jackass: some observers hold that there isn't any. But this wrongs the jackass." Mark Twain - Chris - IYAOYAS!

CK I purchased a Winchester 95 in 405 with the idea of shooting nothing but cast bullets. I designed a real nice 350 gas checked bullet using Mountain Molds design program. I also lucked into a 330 grain gas checked mold from NEI on Ebay. I've shot several hundred, maybe as much as a thousand, of the Mountain Molds bullet working up an accuracy load. I'm just now working on the 330 grain NEI bullet. My efforts have been directed towards pushing those bullets to some where close to 2,000 fps. I've found the best accuracy with cast bullets in my rifle are sized .413. I shoot lead bullets with smokeless in a 1885 BPCR. I use 4759, 4198 and 3031 per the data that comes with the 400 gr Snover Lyman LRHP cast bullets. I use about an extra 2 grains powder with a 320 gas check bullet cast in an NEI mould.

These are available exclusively from Davidson's. I don't know for sure wether or not Davidson"s exports to Canada. If not, you probably never will see one in one of your shops because of the low number of these produced each year. Like only 500. Allen Glore "Annoy a Liberal, work, succeed, be happy"

Allen Glore. I checked with the distributer and they only make 125 a year. They also make a 38-55 which is my my opinion a better plinker, with less recoil. But I take either one. I am waiting to see if I can get one imported. They are a real sturdy rifle and good looking with that octagon barrel. It seams that rifle is more stylish than a Ruger#1. One thing about my Ruger it is a tack driver, dont know about the 1885. Ha'this is a joke. I don't know if I can hit anything with that tang sight. Fred M. Fred M. zermel@shaw.ca

Trouble with the .405 1885 from Davidson's is that it has that danged crescent buttplate. Stylish but foolish on a hard kicker.

vigillinus you have a good point there. To preserve the origional stock, a new one can easely be made without any fancy stuff only with a good recoil pad like a Limbsaver. These are my plans. You ought to see my user stock on my Win Model 21. It is an absolute disgrace but it works and shoots like a charm and easy to change like a pair of coveralls to a tuxedo. Fred M. Surprise, went to the gun store the other day and saw one hanging above the counter. I ask guy how much and was ready to buy it. Alas it was a 45-70 not a 405. The guy says you can also have it in 38-55. So what about the 405 ? The guy did not know. I did not know the were also made in these two calibers. The 45-70 was all decked out with the brass curved butt plate, octagon barrel and a tang sight. Nice gun but I don't want a 45-70. But a 38-55 maybe???? But I may change my mind.
