I just heard from a good source, a local Ruger distributor here in Oklahoma, that Sturm Ruger is going to discontinue the number one. Something to do with the cost of production and the limited market. Might be a good time to buy what is out there or hang on to the ones we have. Or even lobby Mike Fifer, the CEO, to reconsider.

The company has wanted to get rid of No. 1 as a catalog item for years. Bill was the only man that stopped them. He's out of the way now. I'm sure they will custom build them for the big buyers.

For me anyway, the Ruger No.1 was about as classic of a firearm that Ruger produced over the years. I only have two and in my way customized them, one being actually a No.3 in 45/70 heavier barrel than original plus No.1 w/ two barrels, 22-250 and somewhat an oddity, 348Win. 22-250 set up for Unertl 16X and 348 for Leupold 2.5X. 22-250 is 28"/7 twist for 69's through 90's and is very accurate w/ good loads. Consider the No.1/3 as excellent platforms to do just about whatever you want with them. Glad I have mine.

Any idea when production of the number one will stop? I have one and would gladly buy a couple more.

You know, lots of gun snobs have criticised the No 1 as being of 'agricultural implement' quality. I've always believed that this snobbish attitude was mainly due to the fact that ordinary folks like you & me could actually afford to buy one (grin), rather than any perceived inherent fault in the rifle itself.

If production DOES cease, wonder how long it'll take 'til No 1s will become as 'magic' and as sought-after as pre-64 M70s?

Better get 'em now, boys!
Regards, Joe

Yeah but we got the "Single 9" and the stupid "Scout rifle instead !

First went the RSM now the No. 1 ?

At least there are lots around to "mess with", like my ex 30-06 red pad that is now a "velly British" 300 H&H. (wood a tad better than any of the overpriced "limited" production No. 1s being made today)

I am glad I got mine in 9.3x74R when I did. It does everthing I need it to do on big game out to 250yd. I would like a 45-70 with a 26" barrel. I don't know. I already have three match rifles and others for most every other occasion. The problem is I can only shoot them one at a time.

I sent a gun in to have it restocked and the technician said that there wasn't much wood to pick from since the No 1 was going to be discontinued and that no No 1s have been built since January of 2012.

There are 100s of No. 1s and 1885 Brownings out there for sale. Can't imagine what all the whining is about, guess it's more fun to cry than open the wallet. Paid $700 each for my last 1885 45-70 with 3X wood and $700 for a Red Pad 1a in 7x57 with 4X wood. I'd call that two deals especially compared to what people are expected to pay for the "anniversary" M70s and 700s !
Money talks, whining walks. The only discontinued rifles I miss are 721s and 722s as they were both superior to anything Remington makes today.

That was called Premier Grade wood, doubt a stick like that could be forund at the Remington plant!

I miss the Ruger Old Army black powder revolver I bought new and sold a few years ago. If a new one came my way I would snap it up. I also prefer the Remington BDL to the CDL.

The used market however is alive and well. Almost everything comes back on the market eventually.

There are a couple of Ruger No 1s I will get my dealer to find/order in the new year, new preferred but used in great condition will do.

I checked with Ruger and according to their folks only the No. 1B is being discontinued. The other versions will still be made.

If Ruger is really going to discontinue the #1, they might want to reconsider if the assualt rifle ban becomes a reality. It seems to me that more bolt actions and single shots would sell better if other options deminish.
