I found an older No. 1 - SN in 130-0xxx range - for sale in a local shop that appears to be new and unfired. Rifle is in .30-06 with a 26" barrel - I guess it would be medium sporter. Asking price is $695 - they may come off a bit but not much.

Compared to a brand new one this looked like a pretty good deal. I'd rather have one of the non-prefix jobs but they are getting hard to find esp. in good condition.

Is this a good price for the gun? Do the early ones in this sort of nearly new condition bring a premium over newer guns? It does appear to be better finished as the early guns are.

Does it have iron sights fore and aft, as well as the 1/4-rib and rings? If it does and is therefore likely a No. 1-S, that is a very good price for one in almost new condition. If not and is an ordinary No.1-B, it is at least $100 more than I would pay.

I'm with Alberta on this although Number Ones have gone up quite a bit in price at my local gun shows.

Actually, for a 26" 1-S I would pay that sort of money for a like new #1.

Unfortunatley no open sights. I'll have to dig out some old catalogs to see if Ruger offfered the '06 in with open sights and 26" barrel during that era- my Shooter's Bible only shows the magnum calibers avalaible with 26" barrel and sights during that era.

if it has the pink pad and in as nice as you say, its not to bad of a deal but I think 600.00 would be more fair.
But if it as close to 100% condition I migh go 650.00. If it had the box I would go 700.00 or mabye even a we bit more.
There is a #1 page on yahoo you migh post this question there.
I prefer the ones with the sights and the Ribs.
he #1 A is one of my favorites...tj3006

A 1B in that range, NIB, unfired, with tags & literature, is probably worth that price. But not more. I've never seen an '06 with irons in 26" barrel length......

There are all kinds of Ruger No 1s out there that were never catalogued. Two of the 26" barreled No. 1-S rifles that I have personal knowledge of and had the opportunity to buy, are the .30-40 Krag, and the 7x57 Mauser. Am still kicking myself for not having bought both.

My country gal's just a moonshiner's daughter, but I love her still.
