I've been working up loads for my Browning 1885 highwall 30-40 and haven't chronied yet. The manuals say 45 grains of H414 under a 200 grain bullet gives ~2250 fps with a 22" barrel. My barrel is 28"...anyone have any idea how much velocity I'm picking up with the extra 6" of barrel length? I'll post the actual velocity when I get a chance to chronograph.... I can't find the numbers but the higher the velocity the higher loss per inch of barrel.I had no hesitation in cutting my 45-70 Browning 1885 as the loss was insignificant. For your 30-40 you'd probably gain 100 fps for the extra 6" of barrel.

That load should give you close to 2400 FPS. I would start with 48-50 grains of IMR 4350 with the 200-grain bullet, and work up from there. The 30/40 Krag will give some amazing performance in a strong action! "Bitte, trinks du nicht das Wasser. Dahin haben die Kuhen gesheissen."

Guys I posted the results of shooting .454 in my 1885 28". The results are on average much greater than 100fps for 6 inches. At least with the lighter weight bullets it was. Andy B We Band of Bubbas N.R.A Life Member TDR Cummins Power All The Way Certified member of the Whompers Club
