I came into cantact with a fellow who has a J.P. Sauer single shot rifle and I wondered if anyone could give me some information about it. It is a very dainty underlever with 2-leaf express sights. It has a Monte-carlo cheek piece and double set triggers. It does not have an exposed hammer. On the top of the reciever is stamped "TELL V 360/57" but I could find no other marking to denote a calibre. The reciecer is engraved and the stock and forend are checkered. It is a beautiful piece and the owner will part with it but I have NO idea of the value. ANY HELP would be greatly apreciated.

Your description sounds very much like a "stalking rifle". These were very light weight rifles built for easy carry while hunting, hence the term stalking rifle. Calibers varied greatly, but commonly could be 9.3x72R, 8.15x46R, 8x58R Sauer, etc. Also, they normally had double set triggers as you mention. They are fun to shoot, and can be very accurate. In nice condition they sell for $500 to $700 typically, but with nicer engraving and special features can run higher. The other possibility is a Scheutzen (or Schuetzen, or Schutzen) rifle that was used for target shooting. This would go along with the raised cheekpiece, but they usually were not "dainty", and tend to be heavier than stalking rifles. They usually bring a bit more than stalking rifles as well. The marking that you mention (if it is indeed a caliber marking) could refer to several calibers, and without more information it would be impossible to say for sure. A chamber cast would be the best way to pin it down. A possibility would be the 8x57R 360, which is an old blackpowder (and later smokeless) cartridge, which is based on a case with dimensions similar to the 9.3x72R at the base, but with a 57 mm case length. It could also be the 9.3x57R based on the same case. These are just some of the possibilities, so a chamber cast is in order (there should be more proof markings that would help to determine the caliber-typically these might be on the bottom of the barrel under the forearm if they are not visible otherwise). Hope this helps. Jim

there is one just like that in a gun shop in Hastings, MI. Bobs Gun Shop. They are asking 1500.00 and it's not in that great a shape. I've handled it a few times and it is a joy to hold even in poor shape. You can mount it with your eyes closed, open your eyes and the sights are lined up.
