Herb, If I do end up rebarreling I will give you first dibs on the barrel. I know you can rechamber to the big Weatherby cases because I have seen it done. I am shopping for a smith right now and will post my findings here once I decide who I will use. The other option I am playing with is just having the thing rebored to 470 Capstick so I can play with all the .475 pistol and rifle bullets out there, reboring is also MUCH cheaper. Can you tell me a little more about your No.1 Ultramags? What are the barrel lengths and what kind of velocities are you getting? If I can come pretty close to the 338-378 or 378 velocities I could just go with one of them in a 30" barrel. Jason

Hi Sharps 54, For Ruger #1 work I have used Fred Ziglin at Z-Hat Custom Guns. Rifle.Builder@z-hat.com Web page: http://www.Z-Hat.com He is fair and honest. He has rebarreled a couple #1s for me and has one he is completely refinishing. Contact him with your questions. I had him build me a .416 Rem SS Model 70 Winchester that is a tack driver if you can stand the recoil with 400 gr. bullets. I usually hunt with 350 gr., but have 400 gr. bullets for back up duty. Let us know how your rifle turns out. Funhunter

Sharps54 Thanks for keeping me in mind for that barrel. Actually my 3 #1's (7mm RUM, .300 RUM, & .375RUM) are all original barrel lengths. I simply had them re-chambered to Ultra-Mags by different gunsmiths. The seven didn't turn out well. Perhaps the barrel was bad when I bought that rifle used. As to bullet speeds, I'm still guessing as I haven't gotten my chrono yet. IMHO reboring, while cheaper, will give you an inferior end result. You won't wind up with a quality barrel as from the likes of Hart, Krieger, Pac Nor, Lilja etc.. As they say, you get what you pay for. Also, I think you'd do well with one of the Ultra Mags in a 30" barrel, as you'd definitely beat the Weatherby velocities. According to Nosler, the .375 RUM is the most accurate of the .375's - probably because it's beltless. The same should hold true of the .338RUM. Other advantages would be cheaper brass and longer case life. You can't lose. I've been toying with the idea of getting a 28" or 30" octagonal barrel in .338 RUM. For this I'll probably go with Pac Nor of Oregon. After visiting them and chatting with Chris (the owner) I've decided to go with them in any future rebarrelling projects.

Well I have good news and bad news. The bad news is that I will not be rebarreling the rifle. The good news is that it was in wonderful shape, I would buy from old4x4 any day. The rifle became part of a multiple rifle gun trade for a Pedersoli .45-70 double rifle. I will have to find another No.1 down the road but that one was too nice to rebarrel anyhow. Jason
