just returned from the Quigley Rifle Match in Forsyth, Montana. Shot my best score and beat my brother, made the week a great one!
Achieved perfection in a true classic single shot, bought a model 1877 Sharps from Axtell Rifles.
45-70 of course!

At what distances do you shoot? Do you shoot from rests or offhand? How many rounds? How many targets?

Now you need to get an elk with it. That would be my idea of ss perfection.

HB,

the annual Quigley Rifle Match is held on the Lee ranch outside of Forsyth, Montana the wek of Father's Day each year. There are six targets, ranging from 784 yds, 600 yds, 531yds,411yds, 385yds, and 354yds. They are all steel cutouts of different shapes. The long one is a lifesize Buffalo, the closest one is the Bucket and must be shot offhand. The rest are crosssticks or whatever position you favor, except prone.
Eight shots per target for score, and there are no fouling or sighter shots, you go to the line with your five man squad, and shoot as they call your name. Each shot becomes your sighter for the next one. The wind always blows in Eastern Montana, so you can end up chasing your tail if you are not careful. I shot a 38-90 with 375gr bullets that measure 1.495" or so.

That is some long range shooting for sure. I doubt if one hunter in ten could score a hit in five shots with a modern scoped rifle on the longest shots.

That's awesome shooting, Idaho. I doubt I could even come close with my scoped target rifle from my machine rest...

Once you get a load (black or smokeless) that will shoot sub-2moa you are set. All that is left is running elevation numbers on a good software program and converting your vernier tang markings (increments) into moa at 100 yards and then working out your actual settings out to 1000 yards. I have seen some people at The Quigley making minute adjustments because they were hitting a couple inches off center; using cross sticks and iron sights!! I am still in the rough adjustment group that is happy with a ten shot group under 4 inches at 200yds. The biggest pain is figuring out BC's with your own design cast bullets. I have not killed a chronograph yet, key word in that sentence "YET".

500gr Paper Patched Bullet on top of 67gr of GOEX Express 2F. Aka "the Money Bullet" by DanT. Got on the target at 1004 yards and put the last nine shots in a group 9"Vertical by 14"Horizontal. 6-8mph gusting side winds.

Oh yeah, Iron Sights boys. Vernier Tang Long Range rear, Spirit Level windgauge front. I have enough elevation left for about 1400yards.
