I have a #1 in 22-250. I love the 6.5x55 SE and I have another 22-250 for coyotes. My question is do I have to do anything to the extractor to make this work or will the existing extractor work with Lapua brass?

After rereading my original post, I realize that it doesn't make much sense. I meant to say that I would like to re-barrel my Ruger #1 22-250 in a 6.5x55 SE and was wondering if the existing extractor will work with 6.5 Lapua brass. The base of the Lapua brass is a little bigger than 22-250 brass. Hope that makes a little more sense.

Ruger No.1 extractors are very forgiving on small size variations. Even then you can file and mill them easily when needed.

You should have no problem with extraction.

It make no economic sense to rebarrel a good rifle for just the 'caliber'.

It's easier, cheaper, faster and better to just sell the 22-250 you don't want and buy a 6.5 whatever.

Odds are a 6.5x55 Swede in a Ruger #1 is not hanging on every gun shelf in America.

Then again, barrel companies hate rebarelling anything other than a bolt gun these days. I only remember seeing one recently that would do a Ruger #1.

Who is that one that 're-barrels the No 1??.. I've pondered almost the exact same conversion...

Gotta admit, I keep checking the Ruger site to see what calibers they are gonna be this year. Even though they don't post 'em till Jan 1st, if I remember correctly?...

I have done a few. The glitch is re-attaching the quarter rib to match the new barrel.

I've seen some very ordinary rebarrels on No.1's and No.3's.

Had a No.3 rebarreled very nicely, but no qtr rib. Sold it all as a project before completed. Sometimes I should kick myself... Come to think of it, I will!

I sent in a No. 1V in .220 swift and they said the barrel was 'shot out' but they wouldn't rebarrel it with the same chamber as they decommissioned the tooling (didn't have the reamer). They would not send me back the rifle in poor repair either and instead offered to hold the rifle for me until they did have a reamer with no realistic time frame. So they asked me If I'd be willing to accept a replacement in stead of waiting. None of the current chamberings I wanted so they sent me a stainless .270 WIn.

I took that apart and had it rebarreled to a .220 swift like I wanted in the first place. Kind of pissed me off that they wouldn't just let me have my rifle back in whatever condition I sent it to them in though.

Either way. You can have your No. 1 rechambered but I think you'll be unhappy with the procedure.

at the moment i think i have 7 or 8 #1's with replaced barrels. kobe did at least 4 of them including one that is half round half octagon. never have had a problem with any. can't see any reason not to rebarrel one

I'm pretty sure what you described here is called stealing. I wouldn't be just upset, I'd be in contact with folks who could resolve this to my liking.

I would consider a rebore and at half the price of a new barrel and everything fits such as the quarter rib, forend. I have had great luck with Norman Johnson, High Plains Reboring. All rebores have showed excellent accuracy.
