I would like to own five Ruger No.1 working rifles. I would appreciate hearing what five chamberings and configurations would you select. Thanks for your input.

If you're looking for factory rifles, then Bailey's list would be hard to beat. If you're looking for customs, then:

Even though rimless rounds work fine in the #1's, the SS's deserve rimmed rounds, in my snobbish opinion.

You did not say what you plan to use them for, which makes answering you well pretty difficult.


Anyway, for my own uses, I already have way more than 5 No.1's. My 5 favorites for my own use are (in order of bore size)

1. .220 Swift (1-V)
2. tie - 6.5x53-R (deer) and 7x65-R (elk/moose)
(both are 1-S models)
3. .300 Winchester (1-V)
4. .375 NE Flanged (1-S)
5. .450/.400 3"

Note that No.s 2 & 4 are "customs" that were not offered as catalogued factory chamberings.



If I was recommending 5 of them to a young shooter who did not already have strong preferences, I would recommend these (all are available out in the market as factory chamberings, though I suspect No. 3 is no longer made):

1. .22-250
2. .25-06
3. .280 Remington
4. .300 Winchester
5. .375 H&H


If I was able to get two others (both WERE factory made, but never commonly offered at retail), they would be:

the 1-S in 26" barreled 7x57, and
the 1-S in 26" barreled .30-40 Krag.

If he was young enough and financially secure enough, I'd recommend he get one of every different one he ever came across.

As the No. 1-B is already no longer over-all than a 20" or 22" barreled bolt gun, why not select one of those instead? Would make the most of the '06 ballistics, AND reduce muzzle blast a worthy tad. Si? No? Que dice tu?

Knowing you, I reckon your response will make both good sense, and good reading, so will relish reading it.

You didn't make easy to find ammo a priority so here goes:

220 Swift Varminter, but with a 28 inch stainless tube

7x57 International

300 H&H in the Medium Sporter pattern, but with a 28 inch barrel, premium wood, and upgraded sights

9.3x74R in the Medium Sporter pattern, but with a 28 inch barrel, premium wood, and upgraded sights

450/400 Tropical

OR - if you plan never hunt in Africa you may substitute for the 450/400 a...

257 Wby Standard Sporter, but with a 28 inch stainless barrel

Being a bit of a purist, I also believe that single shots, especially Farquharsons, should be chambered in rimmed cartridges. I also believe in choosing the right tool for the job.

So, I would build five customs, all with custom stocks in one or another British pattern, 26 inch barrels with fairly heavy contours, in these calibers:

5.6x57R
7x65R
.333 Jeffery Flanged
9.3x74R
.500/.416 Nitro Express

That would be an interesting set of rifles, and one of a kind, to be sure. One would be ready for anything anywhere with these.

To those who are interested. I have a friend who deals in Ruger #1's. He has alot of #1's for sale.

Good question. In my experience, you don't give up much between a 22-inch and 26-inch barrel in a .30-06, but I find the No. 1A to be quite a bit lighter and handier than the No. 1B. I see the .30-06 as an everything everywhere cartridge. For such a rifle, I prefer light and compact since a lot of my hunting is in steep terrain with lots of brush.

My choices are based on my hunting style and personal experience, having owned most of the choices I have listed at one time or another:

The No. 1V .220 Swift would be a dedicated varminter,
the No. 1B .25-06 would be an open-county antelope and deer gun,
the No. 1A .30-06 is an anything anywhere generalist or heavy-timber deer/black bear gun,
the No. 1S .338 is an open to semi-open county elk/moose gun, and
the No. 1H .375 is a heavy-timber elk/moose or anything Africa rifle.

Okay, I'll "sorta" agree with you. Really though, I'd meet you half way...I'd make it a No. 1-AB. For an all-around rifle, it probably should have iron sights too. Never can tell when those steep hillsides will lead to a scope damaging fall

H: 450/400

RSI in 7X57
#1A in 30,06 or .270
#1B in 7mm Rem mag
The last 2 would depend on if you plan to go to africa,
The 4th would be
For north america. A 1B in .338 win
And 5 a 1H in .375 H&H.
If going to africa I would toss the .338 and get a 416 Rigby.

Hello everyone,

The Ruger No1's are intended to cover varminting and big game hunting in North America and Africa general hunting and VERY possibly buff, leo, and croc. I would use them on a global basis if fortunate enough to hunt more.

I think a varmint model in 22-250, #1A in 30-06, and a .375 H&H would have any needs covered. So you have two more choices for whatever floats your boat.

For me one of those would be the 45-70. Another might be an oddity like .357 magnum done up. One of those would be quiet, shoot like a rimfire in a rifle the size of a #1 yet be a bit more useful for various game purposes.

My choices would be as follows:

Ruger No. 1-V .22-250
Ruger No. 1-B .243
Ruger No. 1-AB .270
Ruger No. 1-RSI 9.3 X 74
Ruger No. 1-H 45-70

I'm at #3 on mine right now. Same idea as yours. A set of working rifles that are there to use and not look at.

My first three are:

1A 7x57
1S 300 win. mag.
1H 375 H&H

The next one I want to add is the 1V in 220 Swift. Its not cataloged any longer so that may take some looking.

For the 5th choice, I'd probably go with another 1V in .223

I have 2 right now a .300 Weatherby and a .375 H&H. I think I'll look around for 6mm of some description. If I had the $ I would then build a .22 LR and a shotgun? - just an old man's dream but an all around combo. --- John 303. *** Great guns aren't they?

Use one gun and change the cartridge load to suit the game. 110 grain to 250 grain range.

Do you remember the ACGG (American Custom Gunmakers Guild)set of Ruger #1's from several years ago? They started off with a bang, and fizzled out because they were squeezing them out one a year. Dressel was one of the late bloomers, and never got past the barreled action stage. I saw that action at Dressel's table, for sale, at the SCI Convention in Reno Friday. Want something special in a 338WM? There's your chance.
