Does anyone see the need for a separate forum for Black Powder Cartridge Rifle? It is partially covered in Single Shot and Muzzleloading, but not really. I know lots of folks that find the big Sharps and Rolling Block rifles an addiction....I think it warrants a separate forum section.

I too would like to see a separate BPCR forum.

Leo, I know of that website, but AR is by far the largest and most active...I thought it deserved a place here.

A man with one of the big 45 or 50 caliber black powder cartridge rifles that knows how to use it can hunt anything on the face of the earth. A lot of elephants were taken with the early black powder express rifles in the 19th century and the guns are without doubt effective.

I have hunted exclusively with Sharps rifles in various calibers for over 35 years, and have taken mine to RSA three times, to very good effect. They add a character and flavor to a hunt like no other rifle.

Few people know how to properly load and feed these rifles, and it requires a certain amount of specialized knowledge to get the best from one. I think a BPCR forum here could go a long way toward expanding the knowledge pool toward the use of these rifles, and for one, I would like to see it.

It would be a very nice addition. If you look at the older ones, there is a tremendous amount of snobbery involved in the BPCRS group. I think one here would be a lot more focused on sharing information than the "it's a secret..."

Sharps Guy,

did you know I own the custom (as they all are) Shiloh that Wolfgang Droege made for Elmer Keith in the early 1970's? SN: EK 100, 45-90 LRE. I had my gunsmith restock it to reflect the 7 inch height differential between us. I hope to shoot it at the Quigley next month.

Rich,
I got my first one...a Browning BPCR 45/70 in the late 1990's and found everyone I spoke to in that specialty arena to be most helpful. I'm not trying to argue your personal experience partner...just didn't want those who have never given it a try to feel like it's entirely made up of secretive snobs. Like any niche sport...you'll find that kind...but also a bunch of folks that will welcome you with a wealth of information to help you along.
My current project is an original 1873 Trapdoor rifle I'm going to be taking into the woods this year for deer and/or hogs. Got the loads, just need more "trigger-time".
Cheers.

I would love to see a BPCR forum. I've loaded cast bullet smokeless 45-70 loads years. I hope that the BPCR forum would not be limited to Black Powder only. I have interest in Several BP rounds, but would like to load them with smokeless for hunting and informal target shooting. I am always interested in lead alloy recipes, bullet casting, etc. These could all be good topics for discussion if they are at least somewhat germane to BPCR.

FISH!!

Heed the words of Winston Smith in Orwell's 1984:

"Every record has been destroyed or falsified, every book rewritten, every picture has been repainted, every statue and street building has been renamed, every date has been altered. And the process is continuing day by day and minute by minute. History has stopped. Nothing exists except an endless present in which the Party is always right."

I've been shooting BPCR since 1991 and would love to see that forum here. Our ranks have dwindled from their height of the late 90's early 2000's but there are still hard-core shooters out there playing the game.
