A while back I had Fred at Bullberry make me a 20 inch 30-30 barrel for my Contender. It shot well and was a perfect truck gun. I sold it like a dummy. Now I see Bobby T with a 6.5 bullberry and a dead hog in a thread above and it gets me thinking about another barrel. Would you do a 6.8 SPC or would you wildcat a .270 improved 30-30? Same sort of uses planned truck gun for anything from deer down to varmints. I have .223 and .22 hornet barrels and two frames. I thought about a .225 winchester, or a 6mm Bullberry imp. I just don't know. Your thoughts positive or negative. I know Fred hates .270's so that's one hurdle I would need to jump. DW

Fred doesn't seem to offer a 270-30/30 wildcat but MGM does http://www.matchgrademachine.c...amberings_public.php Or you could always get a 6-30/30, 25/35, 25-30/30, 6.5-30/30. or a 7-30 Waters from Bullberry or MGM or others...

DW...

What about a 7-30 Waters in a 24" tube?

Bobby and I had been kicking it around awhile, and I picked one up form MGM.

This thing is a hoot to shoot! I think I found my deer load I will use this year using the Speer 130's and BL-C(2). Shoots 3/4" groups at 100 and recoil is nil...

Just a thought. Cool

I have a 6mm 30-30 AI (basically the same as a Bullberry Improved) from MGM that is an incredilbe accurate carbine set up. Personally I think it a tid small for larger game and mine is more of a coyote and prairie dog shooter. I don't care for the 6.8 but a 6.5 JDJ or a 7-30 are excellent choices.

I've seen the targets from xsskeet's 7-30 barrel from MGM, and it's definitely a keeper. The ballistics are pretty impressive from that length barrel as well. I think it would make a terrific hog gun.

Of course, he's going to get me in the doghouse at home because now I am wanting one just like it... Big Grin

My 6.5 Bullberry IMP (aka 6.5x30-30 AI) is a 26" barrel from MGM with a 1:8 twist. I've used it on hogs, coyotes and a whitetail buck, and in each instance, performance has been perfect -- no matter if it's the 120 grain BT, 125 grain Partition, 130 grain Accubond or 140 grain GameKing.

120-125 grainers move out at around 2700 fps, 130 grain ABs register 2626 fps while my various 140 grain loads are all in the 2500 fps neighborhood. N160 is my powder of choice for nearly everything I shoot in it.

My 7mm Bullberry barrel is 20 1/8th inch and has been used to take quite a bit of game. The 7mm BB is basically the 7mm Int'l Rimmed with the unnecessarily long neck trimmed back to give a case length of 1.75".

I am shooting 120s around 2650 fps, the 130 grain Sierra SSP at 2505 fps and various 140s in the 2450 fps range. H335 is my powder of preference for this one.

I have a Bullberry 20" 7x30 straight SS barrel. I've been killing whitetails with it out to 200 yards for years shooting 120 grain BT's, being somewhat careful to shoot just behind the shoulder. It is a .5" gun. Deer either die right there or run 20 yards or so with jelly for lungs. Recoil is so light that you see impact. I vote for the 7/30!

I have a 6.5mm Bullberry Improved By Bullberry. The barrel is 15" long. I shoot 6.5mm Nosler ballistic tips over IMR4064. I get around 2400 fps at max load. I have shot deer to 300 yards with great results. The gun is a 1/2" @ 100 yards with several loads. I use a Burris 3x9 IER scope. This pistol is the most accurate I have ever shot. It is a great coyote gun also.

Thanks for all the ideas. I like the idea of something that doesn't need 24 or 26 inches to perform. I would like to keep it in the 20 inch range so it is really truck friendly. The 7-30 sounds good so does the 6.5 30-30 in a short barrel. Oh Fred hates 270's is why he doesn't offer them. I am glad to hear MGM does. I like em so that is one reason I asked. Funny how we get attached to one or the other. Its not reasonable but it happens. DW
