At the time I was looking for something that would fit into an "intermediate length" large ring M98.

I have in my possesion two "as new" VZ500 (comercial M48 Yugo) actions that have never been barreled, circa 1966. (there is a post concerning "Herters U9 actions" somewhere)

I have since decided that since I have two "standard length" K98 actions with very good to excellent bores that I would go for the 8x68S as a less expensive alternative.

The 8mm Steyr Improved is capable of about 2950fps @ 65000psi with a Nosler 200gr Partition. The 8mm-06 A.I. will be about 75-100fps slower, the 8x68S about 75-100fps faster @ the same pressure.

The 8mm Steyr Improved would only make sense if one was working with the "Intermediate Length" large ring M98 actions such as the VZ500/Herters U9 or M48 Yugos.

Since you are working with a "Standard Length" large ring M98, the 8mm-06 A.I. or 8x68S would seem more viable from a $ standpoint.

Since I am rebarreling my 8mm-06 A.I. I am considering going with 8mm Express A.I.. I have 280 Rem. Norma Brass in hand, and using a 280 A.I. reamer would yield a little more case capacity. (perhaps 3-4grs H2O) I could still use my 8mm-06 A.I. dies I believe. If I get 4grs more case capacity with the 8mm Exprees A.I., it will be about the same as the unimproved 8mm-Steyr case.

I have all of the data to do a "Quickload" prediction for the 8mm Express A.I. including the case weight of the 280 Rem Norma brass, I will get back with the prediction later. I have a "date" with my wife tonight. (Valentines Day ya know) Maybe I'll get "lucky" woohoo!
