Rust Bluing a Bolt

A friend wants me to rust blue his Win M70 push-feed. The bolt on this rifle is jewelled and I'm wondering about the effect of bluing over the jewelling. Will the jewelling still be visible?

I seem to recall Customstox commenting on this in a past thread but a search failed to turn anything up.

My experience in bluing jewelled bolts is that they come out shiny, but almost solid blue. All of the white disappears and there is just the faintest patterning in the background.

Quite the opposite of what it originally looked like.

Wrap the spot you don't want blued with electrical tape.

I can just about assure you that there will be a jeweled pattern left after you rust blue the bolt. It shouldn’t take too much elbow grease to sand the jewelling off though. I have never tried to rust blue a jeweled part by the way, but my experience in rust bluing tells me it won’t work. Try it though it’s not like it would be too much work to re-polish the part and start over.
