I would appreciate any opinions and/or ideas what to do with this blank. It is a curly red maple which measures 32 5/8" long, 6 3/4" tapering to 4 1/4" wide and 1 7/8" thick. It has a little bit of spalting on the butt end. I think the thickness could be a bit of a problem but I am far from being an expert. A Rem. 700 would be what I would be putting into it, either a 308 or a 17 Rem. It has a quite a bit going on with the grain and a nice fiddle back throughout. Also, who could I get to make it into a stock. Thanks, Sam.

1 7/8" won't give you a cheek piece.

The grain doesn't run with the grip, so it'll be a bit weak through the grip. Your not chambering anything with severe recoil though, so it should work ok. I wouldn't build and ultra svelte stock with it.

it's a pretty piece of wood and I'd have no fear in those calibers but without the cheek piece it's not going to be anything I'd want.

No matter what one does it's a lot of time and energy (or money) to make a stock and I'd want it to be right. It's just too thin for my taste.
