Just finished this up last night. I never seem to get around to taking pictures (doesn't really matter since my photography sucks) but I like having them for my own reference. Hope you enjoy and of course I'm open to constructive criticism.

Wow looks more like a space ship than a model 70 now! Pretty futuristic looking. That is some kind of craftsmanship. What are the barrel details?

Looks real nice. I would like to hear more about it.

Are those square bridges welded on?

What caliber? What barrel?
What else are you going to do with it (e.g. bolt handle, bottom metal, etc.)?

Nick,
last night was a mess outside, sounds like you had fun staying in!
Hey, would love to see that one also with the Burgess action, when roads clear up.
Nice work!

The scope mounts are just screwed on, I cut the dovetails on the receiver and then take them off and contour them. I've done a few before but this is the first one I did where I have ground the receiver first, it really makes everything fit up nice. Also you will notice the screws will be hidden under the ring, to do that I add an extra hole up front and in the back as well as welding the back ones up. The way the spacing works out I need a new hole in the rear and I have to re tap it about half a hole off of the original location. That part really sucks because you never know how the steel in a model 70 will act, I almost couldn't tap this one. Its a 270 with a plain #1 contour barrel nothing special. It is being stocked by Winston Elrod with blackburn bottom metal. No bolt alterations either probably just some checkering on the knob.

That is as fine as it gets.

Incidentally, with talent like that, why aren't you doing your own stockwork. It is only a short walk away from what you are doing now.

I call it a side business. I own and run a shop with 20 employees so I don't have a lot of time to devote to gun building. It started as a hobby and kinda got out of hand. I enjoy doing it but try to keep my work load down. Right now I'm climbing out of a deep ditch I dug and I don't plan to go there again. Maybe someday I will do it full time but it would be well down the road (I'm only 30).

Jim,

As I said I have limited time to do metal work so stock making is out of the question right now. I would like for some one to teach me some day though. I have taught myself metal smithing and to be honest there were days I wanted to completely give up. I also have a cut rifling machine so I am trying to devote some time to that as well. I don't want to be the next big barrel maker I just want to make my own and customers barrels in the future.

Looks great Nick! Some of those old M70s can be much more work than starting with a good military Mauser. Shows you stuck with it until it was done.

What rifling machine do you have?

Nick, that is just terrific work. If it were mine, the only other thing I'd ask for would be for you to clover leaf the tang (I find them much nicer looking when inletted into the stock).

The tang is going to get modified according to the pattern stock so I left it as is.

What rifling machine do you have?

James,

It is a homemade machine from the late sixties. It has been floating around here in NE Oklahoma since then. It is really neat, the guy even designed the cutter and as far as I know or anyone I've talked to it is the only one like it.

Would you like a picture?

Thanks

Winston Elrod you say? Hmm, did you happen to square bridge a Winchester 52 for him a few years ago? He told me it was some guy from OK, but would not give me a name. If so, I am still waiting for that 6 month job to be finished 3 years later.

I did the metal work on that but it has been out of my shop for a long time. I do know it is in the wood and almost finished. If you will PM or email me I will try and work with Winston to help you out.

That's very nice metal work. The lines really flow well. Sorry I can't come up with more flowery praise, but it is really good work. I agree with Forrest on the cloverleaf tang
