I'm finally getting around to putting together a "parts" gun. The basics are a Brno 22H action and an Oberndorf Octagon to round barrel with integral rib and front sights.
It has one of those down sized military style rear sight - how is that attached? I see a dovetail but what else, soldered, pinned / what? Any help will be appreciated. --- John

Military sights are all held on with a band around the barrel, a spring, and a pin. A screw and solder holds the band on.
Oh, I see you have a sporter barrel; post a picture of the sight; they are usually just DT'd in.

dpcd; These sights are usually seen on Mauser model Bs, sort of a half size military. I figured out how to remove the ladder (quite a trick the first time around). No pins / screws etc. viseable so just DTd into the rib,but some snug. --- John

Brno 21 and 22s are small ring actions, extremely good actions btw and the Obendorf barrel is not original to the brno action btw..

The barrel with a oct. to round and a full rib should not have what I call a military sight so its confusing. A picture would clear up the situation. A full rib barrel has no place for military sights, it should have a simple dovetail cut??? unless its sleeved with a straight cut as some Obendorfs were, but again the military sight is strange IMO. Confused

That's exactly what it is igorrock, thanks for posting. I realize that the barrel is not original to Brno, I bought the barrel thinking LR Mauser but it turned out to be SR. I just happen to have the Brno action in the bin so I tried it and they look rather nice together - sort of a parts "custom".
Working on a stock now, polishing the metal getting ready to rust blue. Making it a "take down" keeps crossing my mind - but we'll see. I suppose I could take a few pics of the project if someone is will to post them for me. All take care --- John

Ok, if you can build a take down rifle, you can post pictures here. Just load then to photobucket, click on the IMG bar, come to AR and right click; it is that easy. Seriously.

John 303,
That is not what you described in the original post, you said it was octagon to round..The picture of the Mauser 8x60 is a standard round barrel with a round sleeve soldered on and sight base intregal with a dove tail cut..The same set up as an original Brno mod 21 or 22, knock out the sight and install any combination of standing one with 1, 2, or 3 flip ups..

Lothar Walthar makes that exact barrel with a non tapered cut for the slide on to solder base for early Mausers, nice barrels. Not sure if they would make it for a small ring, that might be a custom job. The best way to do that is find a oct. to round shot out 8x57 or whatever and have it rebored..

I built such a rifle on a Brno mod. 21 that I purchased on AR classified. It came with the original 7x57 barrel in good condition and a shot out 8x57 original barrel..I had the 8x57 rebored to .366 and it fit headspace and barrel channel perfectl without any alteration, says a lot for Brno for sure...I built it as a switch barrel 7x57 and 9.3x62. Used the original broken stock glued together for a pattern stock and turned a high dollar piece of Russian Circassion walnut from Old World Walnut (Bill Dowtin) and it was a truly handsome rifle. Dennis Olson did that metal work and turned the stock.

I loved it and it shot great but like all of the good ones, a fellow had to have it more than I, and I had an elk hunt coming up, so I sold it for big bucks..Love those Brno mod. 21 and 22 rifles.

Oct. to round as you described could be done the same way but it would not be cost effective and would probably break the bank unless you can find a old one and have it rebored, they make an awesome rifle.

Ray; I was only referring to the rear sight on the rifle posted "as being the same as mine". The barrel is an original Oberndorf in (30-06). Why SR is beyond me but anyway the rifle should look great eventually. --- John *Yes I too have a "weakness" for the Brnos*.
