new ebay gun and knife rules

Ebay sucks in a lot of ways, but there is no denying that it made it easier to find and sell gun parts and knives. That just got set back a good deal.

Sorry for the extra post. I rarely read the classifieds and did not know it had been covered. Man, I really hate to see them do this

For that reason alone, I won't visit ebay at all, let alone a lot less.

With any luck maybe other gun owners in this country will do the same and stop all shopping on that damn site to send them a clear message that we won't tolerate people messing with our Second Amendment rights.

I'll add them to the list that includes the following:
Target
Levi & Strauss
K-Mart
Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream
Hallmark Cards
and a host of movie actors that I won't spend money on to watch their films.

I'm afraid I'm addicted to Cherry Garcia ice cream Smiler As for ebay they have literally, by percentage, no competition. That's part of the problem. Gun related items on their list probably are less than a tenth of a percent of their yearly gross. Perhaps one of the good firearms auction sites will pick up the slack.

The problem with the gun auction sites is they don't have the cojones to smack down bad sellers / buyers in my opinion.

Thus all the auctions that say "item may be sold locally before auction ends therefore you won't get it even if you win" gee, what a convenient way to do a reserve auction without admitting it - don't like the final price, "Oops, it sold locally..."

I bought a couple of guns and bid on a lot more a few years back, those are the kind of slimy things that turned me off - I haven't been back.

And as far as eBay goes anyway, I haven't seen a good deal there in a damn long time. I sold an Adams and Bennett barrel a while back for $15 more than the price at MidwayUSA - PLUS shipping. I [almost] felt bad.

The new ebay rules should be good for some fun.
Like what can they do besides kick you off?
They are not going to have an army of monitors passing judgment on on very little item.

Will they permit the sale of:
bullet lube but not bullets?
bolts but not firing pins
stock bolts but not breech bolts
scope mount blocks but not breech blocks
extractors but not triggers
stocks but not barrels
bolt handles but not bolt stops
magazines but not trigger guard mag box assys
cartridge lifters but not followers
firing pin springs but not main springs
revolver cylinders but not trap doors

or is it vice versa?

Move your business away from the bastards and someone else and better will take their place. IMO AR classifieds gives better exposure to people you'd like to deal with. Screw ebay

Ebay currently has "an army" of monitors who scan auctions 24/7. They pull auctions they just think may violate any of their policies. It is common knowledge and has happened to me and tens of (hundreds of?) thousands of others. I have read nothing to suggest that they will stop this practice now that they have created an even larger class of banned items.

Marc,
I have bought and sold a good bit of stuff there and never had a monitor question anything. I even paid for reloading components with Paypal which is prohibited.
It is possible to make deals on stuff that they pull because someone will see it before the monitors do.
Nothing like making ebay hire a horde of monitors just to keep the fired 22 rimfire brass off the site. Big Grin

Me too, along with a polite but to the point message. Living in a small town, I find eBay a source for obscure items I may want. Pricy? Not if you had to spend years and travel many miles looking for something!

Since I couldn't find a place to contact them. I sent a note to customer supoort. Basically saying that they had never cared what their customers thought in the past but that I felt that they were way over-reacting. This is what they had to say.

Dear Paul

Thank you for writing in regard to eBay's newly revised Firearms policy.

After the tragedy at Virginia Tech, eBay?s Trust & Safety team along
with executives at the company felt it was important to re-examine our
existing policy and evaluate if it still met the needs of our
marketplace and our company. At eBay we constantly review and update
our policies and, after careful consideration, we determined that this
policy change was in the best interest of our marketplace and our
company.

While eBay hasn?t allowed the sale of any item regulated by individual
states or the federal government in the past, there are still a large
number of firearm-related parts that are legal and are widely available
in retail stores. These items have also historically been allowed on
eBay.

Now, we are extending our policy to prohibit the sale of any item that
is required for the firing of a gun. These items include bullet tips,
brass casings, shells, barrels, slides cylinders, magazines, etc. We
have made the decision to exceed the requirements of federal and state
regulations for safety and to bring our policies in the US and Canada in
closer alignment with our policies in other markets around the globe.

I understand your frustration regarding this matter Paul and apologize
for the inconvenience it caused you.

Sincerely,

Heidi
eBay Customer Support

As I will continue to say they don't care what their customer say or want.

As usual just my $.02

my email to them and their response:

From: Heath Harmon

To: Halprin, Matt
Subject: Ebay gun parts policy

Mr. Halprin,
I recently came across a statement by you regarding the sale of gun
parts on Ebay, such as gun barrels, triggers and such.
"Hello everyone
In mid-August, we will be updating our Firearms, Weapons
and Knives Policy to place more restrictions around gun-related items.
Once these changes take effect, we will prohibit listings of any firearm
part that is required for the firing of a gun. This includes items like
bullet tips, brass casings and shells, barrels, slides, cylinders,
magazines, firing pins, trigger assemblies, etc. Please read the
Firearms, Weapons and Knives Policy for more details on our current
policy.
As you may know, eBay does not allow the listing of any items which are
regulated by individual states or the federal government; however, there
are still a large number of firearm-related parts that are legal and are
widely available in retail stores. These items have also historically
been allowed on eBay.
After learning that some items purchased on eBay may have been used in
the tragedy at Virginia Tech in April 2007, we felt that revisiting our
policies was not only necessary, but the right thing to do. After much
consideration, the Trust & Safety policy team – along with our executive
leaders at eBay Inc. – have made the decision to further restrict more
of these items than federal and state regulations require.
This new update continues to encourage safety among our community
members and brings our policies in the U.S. and Canada in closer
alignment with our existing policies in other markets around the globe.
Sincerely,
Matt Halprin
Vice President, Trust & Safety "

I find this statement a pathetic knee-jerk response from a traditionally
anti-gun organization that I am not completely surprised by, although I
am disappointed. To use a tragedy such as the Virginia Tech shootings as
a reason to stop selling inanimate objects such as gun barrels is one of
the more cowardly things I've seen. If you are worried about products
sold on Ebay being used in the commission of a crime, might I suggest
some other items to put a halt on selling: Forks, hammers, screw
drivers, auto parts, zippo lighters (don't want anyone starting an arson
career via Ebay!), old magazines (don't want someone rolling up a
magazine and beating their dog!), etc.
Though my opinions surely don't matter to you, I will no longer do
business with Ebay. I hope there will be enough people that feel the
same as me that you might feel even the tiniest ripple in your profits.

Sincerely,

Heath Harmon

Hello Heath,

Thank you for your recent email to Matt Halprin in regard to changes to
our Firearms, Weapons and Knives policy. He has asked that I review your
email and respond on his behalf.

At eBay we take the safety of our community and our marketplace very
seriously. We have a Trust and Safety team which consists of more than
2,000 experts in online security and safety who are located around the
globe. This team is dedicated to ensuring that our marketplace is a safe
and trusted place for buyers and sellers to engage in trade.

We value an open and transparent marketplace; if items are legal to buy
and sell in an unrestricted manner we allow them on our site. However,
there are some items that while legal, may not be safe for our
marketplace. In these instances, our applicable policies go beyond the
law to ensure that our marketplace is safe.

Currently we do not allow actual firearms on the site. After careful
consideration our executives and our Trust and Safety team determined
that any item required to fire a gun has no place on eBay. All of our
policies are under constant review. As the Internet and the way our
communities use the Internet evolves, our policies and our marketplace
must evolve with it. We determined that this policy change was in the
best interest of promoting a safe marketplace for all members.

Regards,

Kristine

Gun Control - A theory espoused by some monumentally stupid people; who claim to believe, against all logic and common sense, that a violent predator who ignores the laws prohibiting them from robbing, raping, kidnapping, torturing and killing their fellow human beings will obey a law telling them that they cannot own a gun.

I only see one option. If your pro gun you need to cancel your account. I already did... it hurts I've been "e-baying" for a long time. Maybe they will get the picture. Gun owners buy and sell a lot more stuff on e-bay than gun parts.

My point exactly......
I've yet to ever buy any firearm related part on ebay, although my dad has picked up quite a bit of stuff. He cancelled his account yesterday, which does suck because we've come across some good deals on machine tool related equipment.

As for you fellas that just can't put down the Ben & Jerry's ice cream, I feel for ya....

As gun owners we've have the strongest voting power of any special interest group in the nation, but when things like this happen, we make excuses for funding people that have every intention of supporting every gun and hunting restriction under the sun.
They have no desire for you to ever own a firearm and see no reason why you should hunt.

It's kind like having some liberal hippy come up to you and say, "I hate you.....your way of life....and I'm here to take your guns.....I just need some spare change from you to get things rolling." You're the guys that dig into your pocket for the silver instead of letting them swallow their own teeth. Roll Eyes

For you Ben and Jerry's guys, never fear. The actual Ben and Jerry's company is not involved, in any way, with anti gun movements. It is the FORMER owner, and he will readily admit he has nothing to do with them any more, so eat up.

Then why are they on the NRA's "Black List" still?
They've been there for a long time as well as a lot of celebrities.

yesterday I sent an email to ebay requesting that they not change their gun and knife policy. They sent me the reply shown above. I am surprised they are answering the mails, as they must be getting a lot of them. Guess they have a set up to do msot of it automatically, as with their method of throwing out banned auctions
