I'd like to replace the plain grip cap on my Whitworth. Every other rifle I have had was finished in wood, except this one. So I have no idea what's available as far as decorative cap replacements. Suggestions? ~Ann

Carve one from horn - that would be the traditional solution. There are steel castings available for many replication purposes, but the likelyhood that they would fit your rifle is small to vanishing, so make your own. Water buffalo horn is the norm. www.trackofthewolf.com should have it (and many castings as well). Brent When there is lead in the air, there is hope in my heart -- MWH ~1996

The Whitworth on the left has a Jerry Fisher medium steel cap compared to the unaltered Whitworth on the right. A very small amount of sanding was required to fit: NRA Life Member, Band of Bubbas Charter Member, PGCA, DRSS. Shoot & hunt with vintage classics.

Aspen Hill, Check out Dressels.com they have about five different sizes of steel english style grip caps with all the measurements. Should be easy to get the closest fitting size and work from there. Bob

Thanks guys! This is what's on it and as I said, I don't care for it. Particularly the big screw. ~Ann

Every make of grip cap is made with different dimensions. Measure yours lengthwise and crosswise. Then go to Brownell's. They list the dims of all the grip caps they carry. I doubt you will find an exact fit, but at least you can get one that is close to the original(hopefully). Roger Kehr Kehr Engraving Company (360)456-0831

Roger, I see by your signature line you engrave. What about engraving this thing? I'm a gal and would prefer to carry a PRETTY gun. I really hate that big black screw head sticking out too. ~Ann

Aspen, Have you considered removing the current screw, matching its length and threads in a countersunk head version? It should be easy to have the grip cap beveled to accept the new countersunk screw, and the result would be a screw that wouldn't appear visible from a side view. I like a "sanded to contour" ebony grip cap. and if you like it can be checkered for aesthetics. I just epoxy them on, sand to contour and finish. Ann Have a new oversize, hex head screw fitted to your cap. Have Roger engrave the head with a flower pedal design and what ever you want on the border of cap. James

I rather like the skeleton caps but instead of inletting them to the pistol grip I make an insert of the same wood as the forearm tip and checker it. Looks good and is different. You can also put a checkered wood cap on. I have a checkered wood one on my Brno 602 375 that has a smappl 3/16" Ivory dowel made from Warthog tusk from the first one I killed (with that same rifle) I also made a wood dowel of same wood to plug the boltknob hole checkered that and also installed a small Ivory center. Cheap, easy and different. SCI Life Member NRA Patron Life Member DRSS
