Saving a Special Mauser
Saw one recently that is very rare and someone screwed it up, opened it up to a belted magnum.

I've researched to see if bolts were available that would keep it original but they are not. Its rare enough that parts are rarer than hens teeth with fillings.

The extractor would need replaced but how do you deal with the bolt face? Can it be bushed? Is it a lost cause? How much would it cost to 'fix' it?

I don't believe the action should ever have been a magnum so there are other issues that would need to be considered as well (lug setback, etc.)

Any thoughts are appreciated. Thank you.

First tell us what kind of Mauser you saw. There are literally hundreds of variations of them.

Yes, you must clarify, lots of parts available for most Mausers and welding up a bolt face is doable..It may not be worth the cost of a fix..a picture and the markings on the action would help solve the problem.

trying not to say, thought the hints would be good enough.

It's a Kurz.

want to "Save" it without doing much more damage?

make a suam/wsm wildcat, loaded to lower pressure - then you don't have to "save" several things --

True, but that's not a cartridge I would want on a Kurz. When paying the premium and getting a short action Mauser, I picture a 250 Savage or some fun European cartridge.

Figure I will pass on it, too much work for my taste, just not what I'd be looking for.

Thanks.

Wow, I would like to meet the idiot who turned a Kurz into a belted magnum action. No parts exist for them on the planet unless common with regular 98s.

Call it a hunch but I some how doubt that anyone would put a questionable pressure limit action into a belted mag. I would re-measure the bolt face and see if it's not a smidgen over .550 inch, in which case it's set up for 8x50R Siamese or 8x50R Austrian. Then I would try to get my hands on a couple of those platinum, gold or rhodium casings and see if they feed.

Was afraid of that. Why someone made a beauty like that into a 350 remington magnum, I have no idea.

It really is a mess, if someone was interested in it and could do something with it, the auction ended with no bids. It's relisted. Didn't want to post that fact in case someone here was watching it. Guess its fair game now. If you search the caliber and Kurz on one of the auction sites, you will find it.

PS - m4220 that is a beautiful rifle and quite a tease! Doubt if I would ever be able to afford something like that but I do love to see them. Thanks for posting.

Using a beater bolt for the front end, this could be saved,,,..Not sure whats been done to the rest of the gun, however

The bolt would have to be cut in two and welded back together. And he had to modify the magazine to make it feed with belted mag cases. They were originally made for 250 Savage, 6.5s and and 8x51.

If it will feed 8x50R Siamese, its a simple matter of a new stock, new barrel and new trigger.

If it feeds 350 Rem Mag now, it would not feed a rimmed cartridge. Just down load some 350s and shoot it as is. Easier all around.

Should feed. 350 and 8x50R are the same ass diameter. Within about .010. I like being difficult ! coffee

It's a rim thing, trying to get it to feed in a straight, not angled mag. You are trying too hard. Anyway, who wants a 8x50 anyway.

Actually, I have looked for them; all ours have been converted to 8x56R. On the Steyr straight pull. The converted ones outnumber originals by about 1000 to one.
