Has anyone tried putting scotch tape or saran wrap on muzzle of rifle to keep the snow out of barrel. I do a lot of the dog'n up here in our deer camp , and it is a big problem with me in the fridgid weather,(getting snow in barrel)especially with my ruger .44 deer carbine. Any info would be appreciated: Rick.

I know my stepfather used to put electrician's tape over the muzzle of his rifles. Many here do that and advocate it. It causes no problems at all from what I have heard. The conditions where I am don't require it.

I've used electrical tape on the muzzle. It keeps out snow, rain, grass, sticks, mud, mud dobbers and anything else. No effect on accuracy. I don't think the bullet touches the tape, the column of air knocks it off. I usually keep a couple of extra pieces cut and wrapped around the barrel.

Scotch tape is fine. Also great to keep out other stuff too.

Go to an electronics specialty supply outlet and pick yourself up some "finger Cots". These are little rolled up condom looking things that fit over fingers while working on sensative electronics and are perfect for placing over muzzles to keep crap out.
Two words of caution are in order. First, when taking your weapon from a cold environment to a warm environment, as in coming in from the cold, take these off or moisture will condensate in the barrel forming rust. Second, Don't let your friends catch you with any of these little things in your wallet or you will never live it down...
Yes, the finger Cots work well, but the wife will be suspicious when she sees them with your hunting supples the night before the trip - been there ...........

Electrician's tape works. Condoms work. Plastic wrap over the end, held on with a rubber band, works too. This is what I use, along with a layer of it all around the lock area on my flintlocks.
For years I've been using those little self-adhesive patches that we use on the range to repair bullet holes in the target. They are black - and most importantly - legitimate contents of any shooting box! I carry a strip of them in my shirt pocket.
After a shot, although I have looked, I have never found trace of one - keep hoping to pick one up with a neat hole through the centre.
Anyway I just remove the strip from my shirt pocket and pop another one onto the muzzle.
My reason for using them is not snow or rain but African dust. I'm not in favour of crude fire lapping methods.

I have used both tape and finger cots over the end of the barrel hunting in snow country. They both work, and shoot free without affecting accuracy (I checked this with a .338 Win Mag just for grins). Duct tape leaves a nice hole.
I see some entrepreneur is selling black colored cots as "muzzle covers". For way too much money of course
Use a tape which will still stick to the metal when it is cold, You will know the tapes that dont -- it is apparent when they fall off.

Richard: I always use Scotch 33 electrical tape on my rifles. It's more expensive than the cheap stuff at Wallyworld but way better. You could get by with Scotch 88 but the 33 is thicker. If you're on a hunting trip, wrap several layers around your barrel for later use if you take a shot. Electrical tape over the muzzle has saved my "bacon" several times. I can't see how plain old scotch tape could hold up to the rigors of the outdoors. Bear in Fairbanks
