Picked up a VZ-24 in military garb today. Actually I put it on lay away, The company. will not let have it in my truck.
Its in prety good shape, the guy hyad 3 of them each for 100.00. I picked the one I picked beacuse it has a 1938 serial #.od D24XX and the rest had the faded crest and much higher numbers. I am no Mauser expert but i know pre war ones ar usualy better.
I was wondering abou bottom mettle. My other custom mauser has a rather unimpressive hinged floor plate, But I recall reading someone is selling one like the ones on the MK10, can someone remember who ? Also I think the VZ is often used for some pret intence rounds, but I have know Idea what I will put into this one, any thing from a 6mmRem to a 300 win or mabye a 9.3X62, but I don't think a H&H lengh case will be fit with out doing a lot of stuff to it, am I on a wrong track ? ...tj3006

Sounds like you are on track. VZs make very nice custom rifles and with enough time and money you can make them into almost any caliber. A suggestion is to first determine how much you're willing to spend and then fit the rest of your decisions into that budget. Good luck.

At that price you should have bought them all.....that was a steal...congratulations.....the VZ-24 is among the finest of the Mauser actions.....bar none.

I recommend you avoid shorter than 30-06 length rounds as they swim around in the magazine. The VZ should have the longer 2.5" cases and it can easily be modified to feed the 300 win mag class of cartridges.

Personally I like to avoid the surgery required to make the 300 and 375 H&H rounds as there's a lot of metal often removed from the foreward ring. This has been done successfully on the FNs and Zastavas.....but one can easily accomplish the energies of the H&H rounds with the shorter cartridges.

Among the great rounds for the VZ-24 is the 280 remington, the 30-06, the 9.3x X 62, the 35 Whelen, the .270 winchester, the 240 Weatherby and the 25-06 and a whole host of wildcats including the 6.5-06 and .338-06

As to bottom metal.....I have been using a die cast aluminum hinged floorplate and bottom metal from P A W S.....from Brownell....it's not steel and most folks don't like it but it's very light weight and that's something I like a lot.....they also don't look bad at all. Again, most folks jon't want anything that isn't steel!!!

Thomas - good find on the VZ24.

With a little elbow grease, here's what you have to look forward to.

I would like to have bought all 3, but sooner or later I must eat and pay bills.
I will probably pick it up next weekend.
I will look at the brownells website, on the aluminum bottom metle. I think The one I bought for my 35 whelen was from numrich. I works fine after some modifacation but the matiereal does not want to blueas nice as I want. I don't mind a little heft on a rifle so I would prefer steel beacuse it will blue better.
I will probably spend beetween 12 and 1500.00 on this one if no disasters befall me in the next six months. 1st i will put a few rounds through it as is, but with my 47 YR old eyes I will be happy to hit a pie plate at 50 yards with those awfull sights,. No wonder we won the war, I could hit a lot better with the garands peep site...tj3006

$1200 to $1500 will buy some pretty nice trappings. Are you sure you wouldn't rather start with a commercial FN or something similar? I'm not knocking the VZ 24 in any way, but your budget gives you a lot of options.

9.3x62 would go good with that VZ.

As I returned a PM to someone about this you might want to act fast. The VZ-24s are at the gun braoker in Clackamas Or. 503 657 7203
and tigard or 503 639 9614.
If I do a 9.3 X 62
I would probaby do it with some sort of QD rings and a good ghost ring. It would be a good fun choice but most of my hunting is in an area where you might get a long shot, or you might get a poit blank shot, with that in mind if I go with a bigger type round i would probably go with a .338,06 or a whelen, or mabye a .358 Norma...tj3006

$100 is a local price.
In a large market, $100 was a few years ago.
Now $150 is more likt it.

I have converted VZ24s from 8mm to 308, 308, 257RAI, and 300WM.

I have one someone else coverted to 30-06.

I really like all of them.

One of my favorite, and most accurate rifles is a VZ-24 in 8x57
