The manual for my new cz550 magnum states that sight elevation is adjusted by using front sights of varying heights. Does anyone know where to get these? The neither the cz manual nor the cz website offer them. Does anyone know how to get the front sight guard off?

Just smack the cover and it will slide off. I never could find replacement beads. I wound up fitting a Ruger replacement bead to one of them.

You might call the factory and see if they are any help.

Push the front sight hood to the rear, NOT toward the muzzle. A little tap with a screwdriver handle or small brass or plastic hammer may be needed to start it the first time off. The grooves on the sides of the front sight ramp are machined so as to stop forward motion when the hood edge projections seat in to them, as recoil makes the hood slide forward as the rifle goes backward. It will slide back on easily from either direction and snaps into it's detent with spring tension from the hood itself. It is a bit smoother to put it on the way it came off. It stays put well, despite the crude nature of attachment. Not quite NECG Masterpiece stuff, but good.

Any of the old BRNO ZKK 602 front sight blades/beads will fit the CZ 550 Safari Magnum. I got lucky with some take-off barrels and found the ones I needed.

Like Will, I have shaped some of the NECG replacement Ruger sights to fit the CZ, as have others here.

Compare the two and you will see what needs to be done with a file and a Dremel Tool. You have more than enough steel on the Ruger sight. You just need to get rid of what doesn't fit in the CZ dovetail that the sight slides into. Then you reshape the front of the sight to fit the plunger that pops up in front of the sight as a stop on the CZ. The Ruger plunger is in the rear of the sight and is a lot fussier to release. The CZ mechanism is better than the Ruger's on this detail. And at least there is a hood on the CZ's.

Hand fitting. Gunsmithing 101. [Smile]

If anyone finds that you can order the front sight from CZ or a source for old BRNO ZKK 602 sights, let us all know, please.

I think they are available from CZ in Kansas City, Kansas. Just call and ask for "Mike". They were $7>8 about a year ago. They come in several diffent heights, but only that damn tiny bead!

Will, what did you use to get a larger front bead for your 416?

If the tiny bead is the only option, then get the Ruger bead from NECG. Get out the file and Dremel Tool. That is the BEST option. They have 3/32" white or fiber optic red, also 3/32". Either one is good. Height's are .330", .350", .375", .415", .435".

You can file the express rear shallow V for fine tuning.

There are still some old BRNO ZKK 602 sights to be found. Some had a flip up night bead or were sourdough or patridge type posts.

There is always the custom gunsmith if needed. They are even better than your file and Dremel tool or they at least know how to use them well.

A word of warning on the plastic fiber optic beadsL: heat or solvents will ruin them. I found out first hand when I got carried away with the Dremel and grabbed the Gun Scrubber to cool it off fast. Ruined. Go slow and keep a spray bottle of water to cool with.

I wouldn't even bother to get another tiny bead of the right height for a big bore.

The NECG beads are great, and easily reshaped to fit.

Oh yeah, better just go slow. Less likely to get electrocuted from the Dremel if you are not standing in water. [Big Grin] Or, be a real gunsmith trainee and use only files for this homework assignment.

I do not know the measurements of the sights height, I was not as forward thinking as the Good Dr. I just bought all of them from #1-#14 ouch! I did not want to mess with filing the rear V. I knoiw I would mess it up somehow. So I bought all of the different heights. Now I just need the courage to go out and fire 3 rounds of each height in my .375 Weatherby until I am right on.
Another ouch!

I have an old bicycle seat that is made of the gel goo I forgot when I returned to school. I'll have to have my wife send it to me. [Smile]
