Spencer, I was going to order a new one but if you have one I will come up with something else Mike Legistine actu quod scripsi? Never under estimate the internet community's ability to reply to your post with their personal rant about their tangentially related, single occurrence issue. What I have learned on AR, since 2001: 1. The proper answer to: Where is the best place in town to get a steak dinner? is…You should go to Mel's Diner and get the fried chicken. 2. Big game animals can tell the difference between .015 of an inch in diameter, 15 grains of bullet weight, and 150 fps. 3. There is a difference in the performance of two identical projectiles launched at the same velocity if they came from different cartridges. 4. While a double rifle is the perfect DGR, every 375HH bolt gun needs to be modified to carry at least 5 down. 5. While a floor plate and detachable box magazine both use a mechanical latch, only the floor plate latch is reliable. Disregard the fact that every modern military rifle uses a detachable box magazine. 6. The Remington 700 is unreliable regardless of the fact it is the basis of the USMC M40 sniper rifle for 40+ years with no changes to the receiver or extractor and is the choice of more military and law enforcement sniper units than any other rifle. 7. PF actions are not suitable for a DGR and it is irrelevant that the M1, M14, M16, & AK47 which were designed for hunting men that can shoot back are all PF actions. 8. 95 deg F in Africa is different than 95 deg F in TX or CA and that is why you must worry about ammunition temperature in Africa (even though most safaris take place in winter) but not in TX or in CA. 9. The size of a ding in a gun's finish doesn't matter, what matters is whether it’s a safe ding or not. 10. 1 in a row is a trend, 2 in a row is statistically significant, and 3 in a row is an irrefutable fact. 11. Never buy a WSM or RCM cartridge for a safari rifle or your go to rifle in the USA because if they lose your ammo you can't find replacement ammo but don't worry 280 Rem, 338-06, 35 Whelen, and all Weatherby cartridges abound in Africa and back country stores. 12. A well hit animal can run 75 yds. in the open and suddenly drop with no initial blood trail, but the one I shot from 200 yds. away that ran 10 yds. and disappeared into a thicket and was not found was lost because the bullet penciled thru. I am 100% certain of this even though I have no physical evidence. 13. A 300 Win Mag is a 500 yard elk cartridge but a 308 Win is not a 300 yard elk cartridge even though the same bullet is travelling at the same velocity at those respective distances.

Let's get the butt plate and grip cap settled. I believe M1 Tanker said he has a case hardened set. I think that would look great. If we must order one, let's decide which. I just recently used Neidner's and wasn't that impressed. I think the picture frame kind that shows the endgrain of the stock can be pretty classy. What does everyone else think? -Spencer

Buttplate and grip cap basically are already settled. The cap will be a skeleton by Dakota. I already have a recoil pad(via cash dontation) and if no one wants to donate a steel buttplate I will use the pad and do a leather covered pad. Either way works for me folks.

Update: Once again let me say thank you to everyone who has donated. I guess its time to get the ball rolling here so everyone please send your donated items. Once everything gets here I will take a few photos and post them. My address: 5292 Springdale-Hunters Rd. Springdale, WA 99173 Please DO NOT send anything signature required. For those who are still wanting to donate there are a few optional things remaining. None of these are required but would be a great addition. No one asked my opinion, but I'll give it for free. While I know they're classic, steel buttplates especially if they're Neidner style make it difficult to shorten or lengthen the stock. Since this gun is not for a specific person, I vote for a recoil pad, preferably thin so adding a thicker one to lengther the LOP will be easy. xxxxxxxxxx When considering US based operations of guides/outfitters, check and see if they are NRA members. A pad definitely makes more sense for a "one size fits all" rifle. Another idea is to leave the LOP long and unfinished. The winner could then specify the LOP and pad or plate preference. ______________________________ "Truth is the daughter of time." Francis Bacon

Mr. Soverns Just for the heck of it, why don't you tell us a little bit about your plans for the stock.
|

22WRF, I would be happy too.....just please stop calling me Mr. Soverns. I hear that and think your talking to my Dad. lmao The stock will be a classic. Slight drop to strike the middle of the road pose to accomodate the iron sights. Shadow line cheekpeice. Grip will be slightly open with a skeleton grip cap. Ebony forend tip at 90 degrees. The barrel will be 22" so the stock will be fairly small and trim. Checkering will run 26lpi in a fleur de lis pattern. 4 fleurs on the grip and 3 on the forend pattern. Finish will be varnish soaker coats and Ben Matte for the wetsanding and hand rub coats. I will probably bed the recoil lug and rear tang area.

I like the idea of really fine and curvy checkering. I suggest a longer 24" barrel because if we go with the 7X57, it can get some pretty decent velocities. I also assume the butt plate or pad has been settled as well? Also, can we do a Schnabel tip? -Spencer

A schnabel looks good on a light weight rifle, but you ain't gonna make a light weight out of the montana without doing some serious work on the action. Also the schnabel may turn some people off. I think this needs to have the most appeal to the greatest number of people and the ebony tip will do that. Myself, I'd rather have it checkered in a really well executed point pattern, but I think most people will like the whop de doos. Speaking of schnabels, I did a schnabel in ebony on a little ruger 77 in 6mm rem one time, pretty neat look, wish I still had that rifle. John

Perfect. Then I won't hear any complaints about the box of parts I'm sending your way for use on the charity rifle. One set of Weaver ultra-high look-through scope mounts that came of of my Uncle Leonard's Glenfield 30-30. A 1951 Buffalo nickel and a piece of genuine Louisiana ivory (nutria tooth) that you can inlay into the buttstock. A dozen assorted white-line spacers that you can work into every joint on the stock. Use your imagination to put all of them to good use. A BOSS system that came off of a 243 Browning A-Bolt that had a tough time with a hot 308 handload. We want the charity rifle to be a tack driver. A semi-finished thumbhole stock that I carved myself from a railroad tie. It's patterned after the stock on M1Tanker's favorite rifle. That's it for now, but I've got some other boxes to look through. ______________________________ "Truth is the daughter of time." Francis Bacon
