What is the recommended stock for the Montana action? I would like to use the McMillian supergrade and the featherweight. Anyone know anything here?

I talked to Boyd's twice about the SA lefty and they said they wouldn't make anything for them for at least a year. I hope you talked them into doing something sooner. I also spoke with the Wenig company and they sounded real interested in helping me out so maybe they would be someone to talk to also. LH SA doesen't seem like it will be easy to find a semi finished stock made out of wood (laminate or walnut). Any help would sure be appreciated. Tony

257 Rock: I'm also handling Acrabond Laminates operation while Mel is in the hospital. Acrabond will definitely be among the first to supply both LH & RH SA in the lightest, best looking wood laminate you could ask for. We are simply waiting on the new MRC bottom metal for the Short Action. CAD is complete (two days ago) and first units will come in about a month. I am sure this has been asked before, but what is the chance of getting an action with Mauser type bolt release? If I use one of the long actions for a classic express-style rifle, I think that would be more in keeping with this type of rifle.

Do you think the Accrabond stock will handle the recoil of a left handed 416 Rem Mag or would I be better off with McMillan ? I like the looks of wood but reliability is paramount.

I had the opportuninty to talke to Mel twice a few weeks ago. He was helpful in every way, really seemed like a great person.

Mbogo375: The bolt release feature in the M1999 is integral to the design and molded into the receiver. It is a "Sako" style rocker in the Mauser position. If you're worried about the bolt falling out if the rocker is depressed by brush, simply remove the pivot screw and add a REALLY stiff spring. One of our customers is doing just this for Africa, as he knows the PH will not depend on any safety other than the bolt straight up.

I have a magnum action of yours and it looks like to me I can use my pre 64 M-70 pattern stock with little difficulty, a little glass here and there should do it...I intend to use a Blackburn drop box and a Lothar Walther 404 Jefferys barrel on it, complete with quarter rib, barrel band sights etc....

Does the pattern stock sound workable to you? It looks close enough for Government work. I will also have a pattern stock for your action made from this one.

Thanks for the reply. I was not worried about the function of the bolt release. It is strictly from an aesthetic standpoint that I was questioning the appearance of the Sako-type release for an otherwise classic rifle (to each his own, but I have always preferred the traditional appearance of the Mauser bolt release to the Sako ). This is not to say that I would not have a Sako, as I do own several, but they just don't scream "Express Rifle" to me .

I do think that your actions have many good features, and I certainly believe they will be a great basis for a fine custom rifle. I have been considering one for a new large-bore project.
