I have a question for the more experienced. I am looking at having a lite varmint rifle built for gofers and paper punching. Caliber would be 223 or 22br.I have a Rem 700 short and a Ruger no.1 both in need of a rebuild. My question is which would be the more accurate for an application like this.

If both actions could deliver the accuracy you are after, which one would your prefer.

growler,

The Rem 700 short would be a lot easier to shoot accurately. The no. 1 is very sensitive to forearm pressure.

A lot more smiths know the magic on the 700 than on the no. 1 also.

Mike, I dont have a specific preference. I have a couple of Rem rifles which work well for me. The ruger is something different and would make a nice compact unit. I guess I am wondering if the accuracy potential is there or if it is too much trouble and or expense to attain in the Ruger?

You can have all the accuracy work done on the Ruger #1 for about the same price as getting your Rem 700 action trued. If you want to replace the trigger on the Ruger #1 it will cost a bit more than a Timney for the 700 but a lot less than a Jewell. Fitting a new barrel to the Ruger will cost you a bit more than the Remington. Barrel cost will be the same. There are a lot of after-market goodies for the 700 that aren't available for the Ruger #1. One other thought...if you rebarrel to .22BR your 700 will basically be a single-shot because it is a "b____" to get the .22BR to feed from a magazine. It is, however, a great little cartridge that will do almost anything a 22/250 will do and the barrel will last a lot longer.

You will almost certainly achieve better accuracy basing the rifle on the 700. The No. 1 can be made to shoot pretty well but not that well. Regards, Bill.

growler,

If you have no real preference the Rem 700 is the way to go. As couple of others have already said, you will be able to get a Ruger going but a Rem 700 will be easier.

If accuracy is the main goal you will normally get better results when there are lots of things you can do.
