I see one listed locally in 30-06 for $325. It appears to be in great condition. Were these push feed or CRF? How do they rate against a model 70?

A Winchester 670 is a push feed and has a side safety just like a Remington. Decent rifles but it better be real nice for $325. The stock will be some hardwood other than Walnut.

It's also a blind box but is easily converted to a Floorplate via Williams. :-)

Winchester's 670 was fairly crude.

Triggers like a rough rock and bolts were rough.

A very poor attempt to make a thrifty rifle.

It's a Bausch & Lomb for scopes with no internal adjustments.

The Winchester 670's with the side safety were the first year or so of production. I have only seen one parts list (1966?) that showed this version.

Then they used the three position safety on the rest of them.

You will also find some of them without any prefix number on some of them. The GCA of 68 caught Winchester and they then used the letter G as a serial number prefix up till 1972 when the 670 was dropped and the 70A came into production.

So due to the overlap in designs you will find three types.

A side safety on the tang, no anti bind device, push feed.

A three position M70 safety, no anti bind device, push feed.

A three postion M70 safety, with anti bind device, push feed. Normally with the letter G prefix

They were made in 243, 270, 308, 3006 and 300 Win Mag. The factory stock was made from Birch.

That questions is asked fairfly regularly out there in the gun world. Here is an answer from another site:

-------------------------------------

# 1301 - Economy Mod .70
6/2/98
John KS, USA

Maker Model Caliber Barrel Length Finish Serial Number
Winchester 670 30-06 22" from end of bolt Unknown 134***

What year is the gun? And is an owner's manual available?

Answer:
John, the Winchester Model 670 is an economy version of the popular model 70. The Model 670 was manufactured between 1967 and 1973 and came with a hardwood pistol grip stock, 22 inch barrel, open sights and a non-hinged floorplate. Values for the Model 670 are in the $150.00 range. To obtain an owners manual contact: U.S. Repeating Arms Co. (Winchester), 275 Winchester Ave., P.O. Box 30-300, New Haven, CT 06511-1970... Marc

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Obviously , from the value put on it and the fact that the inquirer was referred to the New Haven plant for a manual, this is an OLD answer. But, anyway, the 670 was essentially an economy version of the Model 70, much like the Remington 78 was an economy version of the Model 700.

How much is the bottom metal for one. I have a M70 push feed with blind magazine and I would like to upgrade it to a stock with bottom metal. Anyone have a link to someone who sells it.

My second centerfire bolt action rifle was a Model 70 in 30-06 I bought in a Pawn shop for $200 after my Remington 700 had been stolen.
The stock broke pretty quickly and so I replaced it with a fiberglass one.
Mine was a 3-position safety with anti-bind.
Mine shot really well. I used it as a stock-making project and still have it. I used the Williams bottom metal with it.

They make really nice stuff and it's usually pretty reasonably priced. Highly reccommended.....................DJ
